Although having now looked at the numbers and glanced through the comments, I agree with commenters arguing that AO3 is not a good source - at least not as your only source - for this sort of thing, because it does tend to be very slash-centric. OTOH, you can't sort ff.net for the type of ship it has, which makes numbers from there even more suspect.

Basically: getting meaningful data on this is a problem. :P

To me it was interesting that to some the prominence of slash in fandom is a more recent development because I assumed fandom's always been slash-centric. So AO3 at least seems a good source for the zeitgeist. Now I briefly checked fanlore and fanhistory but they don't seem to have any panfandom stats of that sort, but I found something for Harry Potter: http://www.fanhistory.com/wiki/File:Harry_potter_het_gen_slash.PNG
