snickfic: Spaceman Spiff about to crash his spaceship (mood sf)

I went and saw it! Clearly Marvel is doing something right, because they have gotten 100% of my theater dollars so far this year. (That would be for Cap 2 and this, mind.)

Unspoilery: I see the flaws, and yet, FUNNY SPACE OPERA. BE STILL MY HEART. I feel like I haven't seen a proper big-budget space opera since Revenge of the Sith. Can that be right? Woe.

Spoilery:
* That first scene, when Peter Quill turns on his cassette player and starts jamming through the alien ruins? That was when I was sold.

* Rocket completely stole the show all of out proportion not only to his size but the number of lines he had.

* PETER CALLED HIM RANGER RICK. You guys, I imprinted on that magazine. My childhood, let me show you it.

* Nebula's costuming and makeup: 5x better than anyone else's. SO good. Karen Gillan was quite good as well. "I hated you the least." *sob*

* The actual for-serious stirring speech and what not with Peter, I could have done without. Otherwise, though, Chris Pratt managed to charm me despite my antipathy to Representative White Male Protagonist.

* Also Peter gets menaced and pained in ways that spoke to me.

* It's too bad Saldana didn't get to be funny. Why doesn't the girl ever get to be funny?

* Gamora's character and backstory were interesting, but SO clunkily developed. She tells us she's betraying Thanos, but I assumed at first it was a trick, because we had no reason to believe her. And later, we get her whole backstory in exposition. Rocket's 30 seconds of drunken raving delivered way more punch.

* Also not well developed: Nova. Apparently they're important, because I've heard of the Nova Corps, but the movie did not in any way explain why they'd be any better suited than anyone else to take charge of an infinity stone.

* The music made me so happy, you guys.

I need an MCU icon, maybe.

EDIT: FYI, there's kinkmeme for Guardians of the Galaxy and other cosmic Marvel, including comics. Not much fic yet, but half of the prompts there are the most adorable kink prompts I have ever seen.

LOL I would say the same thing, except I didn't actually pay to see GotG either time (I would have, I just didn't have to). So really it's just Chris Evans getting all of my theater dollars, lol, since I also saw Snowpiercer, too.

That first scene, when Peter Quill turns on his cassette player and starts jamming through the alien ruins? That was when I was sold.

ME TOO! Before I saw it, I was like, "This entire concept is so nutty that either they are going to nail it and it'll be hilariously weird and perfect, or it'll be a complete disaster of a trainwreck." And then I saw that scene and was like, "Yeah, they're gonna nail it."

The actual for-serious stirring speech and what not with Peter, I could have done without.

LOL the thing I loved about this movie, though, is that there is not a single serious moment that isn't then undercut by someone making a joke that points out how ridiculous or cliche it is.

(Also, after I saw the movie the second time, we were chatting outside the theater and Emmie moved so the five of us were standing in a circle and then quoted Rocket's line about "a bunch of jackasses standing in a circle." Because Emmie is the best/worst person.)

It's too bad Saldana didn't get to be funny.

To be fair, "Who put the sticks up their butts?" made me laugh a LOT. And her fantastic "OH HELL NO" facial expression when Peter tries to pull her into his dance-off with Ronan. And you better believe I will be using the term "pelvic sorcery" as often as possible from now on...

But yes, I wanted way more on Gamora's backstory and I'm hoping for more Gamora/Nebula interaction in the sequel.

Apparently they're important, because I've heard of the Nova Corps, but the movie did not in any way explain why they'd be any better suited than anyone else to take charge of an infinity stone.

Yeah... Then again, Sif also gave the Collector an infinity stone in Thor: TDW with even LESS justification, lol. (Also interesting that he very nearly ended up with two stones here.)

Glenn Close kind of talked about wanting to be the Samuel L. Jackson of the cosmic MCU, so I expect Nova Corps to keep popping up the way SHIELD did in the Phase 1 movies.

I need an MCU icon, maybe.

I haven't gotten around to iconning GotG yet, but via [community profile] fandom_icons, here's Rocket, Gamora, and assorted GotG icons.

ALSO OMG THE MUSIC!!!!!! I... may have immediately downloaded "Awesome Mix Vol. 1" from iTunes and have been dancing around to it for like a week and a half. BEST BEST BEST.

I hadn't really thought about it before, but Marvel is surprisingly limited with soundtracks for its movies. The only movies that even use popular music are IM and IM2, most of which didn't make it on the soundtrack. Otherwise, the soundtracks are entirely just the score.

Weirdly, IM2 and Avengers also each put out a CD of songs "inspired by" the movie, few (or none, in Avengers' case) of which were actually USED in the movie.

So it was delightful to have a Marvel movie that had such a great soundtrack for once. I have mixed feelings about James Gunn in general, but if he wants to choose the music for everything from here on out, I would not complain.
