snickfic: (Yuletide)
[personal profile] snickfic
I have a bunch of fics downloaded to put on my Kindle later, but I'm pretty much done with my pre-reveals reading, so have a final batch of recs.

Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Which alters when it alterations finds - Belle/Beast, 6k
Belle has some mixed feelings about her beast's new human form. This is the Belle/Beast xeno fic of my dreeeeeeams. It has xeno and also body and identity issues and also kink issues and also FEEEEEEEELINGS. If you read only one fic this Yuletide, read this one.

The Dispossessed – Ursula K. Le Guin
The First Train to Brotherhood - OCs, 2k
A lovely pre-canon meditation on language and ideals and work. Very much fits the tone and the spirit of the book, which is the highest possible compliment, IMO.

Sunless Sea / Fallen London
The Virulent
This is a Choose Your Own Adventure fic with monsters, horror, much sailing across the salt zee, and femslash possible on every major track. If you're not so much into CYOA-type fics, there's also a link in the author's notes to one possible route through the story, formatted as a single 15k fic. It got me back into Fallen London after a year or more away, and I don't know that there's a higher recommendation than that.

Strange Empire
The Antidote - Rebecca/Kat/Isabelle, 2k
Rebecca invents sex pollen, more or less, and then does experiments with it, the results of some of which are far more pleasurable than she expects. This is one of those fics I had no idea I wanted, and yet here it is. Great Rebecca voice.

Sunshine – Robin McKinley
Different Ways of Being What We Are - Sunshine, 6k
In retrospect, it makes perfect sense that Sunshine's growing magical power would manifest itself in baking. This is just a great what-happens-next fic for this canon, full of pastries. Great character voice.

The Running of the Deer - Sunshine, ensemble, 9k
This pretty much reads like the first chapter in the much-needed sequel to the novel, with all the good and bad that implies. Pitch-perfect character voices, Goddess of Pain cameo, mysterious magic, secret messages from people of dubious intent. But also reeeeally leaves you wanting more.

Imperial Radch – Ann Leckie
Always the Next Morning and the Next - Breq/Seivarden/Mercy of Kalr, 1k
On a night when Breq is far away, Seivarden comes to Mercy of Kalr for comfort. Lovely look at the edge of the triange that doesn't get as much attention. From Mercy of Kalr's POV.

Dark Watch - Breq/Seivarden/Mercy of Kalr, 2k
Another quiet, dead-of-night conversation between Seivarden and Mercy of Kalr, this time from Seivarden's POV, and with lots of insight into her.

What the Body Doubts - Seivarden, Translator Zeiat, 4k.
Seivarden wakes up and finds herself held by the Presger, who send Zeiat to speak with her. I honestly am not quite sure what happens in this or what it's all about, but it's really interesting and gives us just enough a glimpse of the Presger to make them even more alien.

Reconaissance - Sphene, 1k
A collection of brief, enticing glimpses of Sphene before and after she boards the Mercy of Kalr. This fic does a lot with few words. I especially love the bits with the game of counters and with Kalr Five, putting the tea set back together.

The Story of a Tea Set - Sphene, 1k
Sphene, as seen via the antique tea set. I love character studies that focus around something concrete, and I love Sphene's complicated relationship with the tea set here.

The Flower of Tisarwat - Tisarwat, 1.5k
Tisarwat struggles to define herself, partly via poetry. This is another delicately told character study, this time sprinkled with original, in-character poetry, which is super hard to a) write well, and b) work into a fic, and this fic does both. Just lovely.
