snickfic: text: Geno 71, I'm Score (geno)
This was the year of ALL THE FANDOMS and ALL THE EXCHANGES. I didn’t so much mind hopping and skipping around fandoms, but my first and foremost goal for next year is FEWER EXCHANGES.

Anyway, as a result of those two things, my writing has been kind of fragmented. I ended up posting 75k words in finished fic, which is down just a tidge from last year and included several exchange fics I was really happy with. I ended up writing 21 fics - 4 hockey, 4 SPN, 3 Buffyverse, 3 Marvel comics, 2 Saga, 1 SPN RPF, 1 MCU, 1 Downton Abbey, and 1 Decoys (movie).

In addition, I wrote somewhere between 30 and 40k this year on various other fic projects that have not yet seen the light of day, which is a little frustrating. One of my goals for the new year will definitely be to get some of those finished up and out into the world.

Below the cut I go into a LOT more detail, because these retrospective things are better than cake.

Last year was super productive for me; this year was slightly less so, but still my second-best writing year ever. I wrote or finished two more +20k fics, which pleases me. I didn't write as much stuff this year I was super happy with, though; I don't feel like I was experimenting in as many directions as last year, either. IDK, maybe I was getting more solid at the things I learned last year, rather than learning new ones. However, I did write 26.5 fics – 14 SPN, 6.5 SPN RPF, 3 Saga, 1 FF, 1 Discworld, 1 Buffyverse, for a total of 79k words, which is nothing to sneeze at, I suppose.

It is that time folks - the time of the year when Snick goes on and on and on about the prior fannish year. I'm going to write a fic-specific round-up once Yuletide's revealed, but in the meantime, here's a summary of the rest of my fannish activity this year.

Y'all, I have had the most spectacular fic-writing year. I said something like that last year, but this year blew that out of the water. I wrote 135k worth of fic this year (including 15k posted that I haven't yet put my name to); best previous year was 75k. I wrote a whole range of things I'd never have guessed: explicit sex, some real actual kink, some m/m, some f/f, and a threesome. I wrote two fics longer than 20k. I wrote fics for The Vampire Diaries, Downton Abbey, and my Yuletide fandom, all brand-new fandoms, as well as my old standbys.

Below the cut I go into more detail. A LOT more detail. This got long, folks.

Y'all, I am so proud of myself this year. I really, really am.

'Tis that time of year again: the time when I ramble on at length about fic and other fannish activities. It seems unlikely that I'll post any more fic before the end of the year, so I'm just going to go ahead and do this before holiday busyness sets in.

I had what was, for me, a really spectacular year in fic. Variety was the word this year: three fandoms, tons of POV characters, several different ships, a full range of genres.

This year was definitely the Year of the Drabble: I wrote 26 of them. Despite my recollection to the contrary, I wrote a fair few other things as well, including my first real attempts at Buffy/Spike. I’m pleased about that. In particular, I seem to have begun a Spuffy WIP, although really it’s just a loose collection of one-shots.

In general fannish participation, I wrote for both rounds of [livejournal.com profile] genfic_minis and for Yuletide. Also there was the Merry Christmas to the Flist project, which I’m working on the tail end of. (Happy Martin Luther King Day to the Flist?) And now I’m all officialized as a mod over at [livejournal.com profile] seasonal_spuffy, which so far has just meant index posts as usual, plus some tag wrangling (which will be gotten back to here soon!).

Plus: new friends! I’ve gotten to know some of you better, including some I didn’t know at all this time last year. (Hi, Bob! Hi, Verity!)

Fannish surprises: Sherlock - had no inkling that I’d adore that like I do (the first third, at least). Dawn/Ethan (mildly though I ship it). Pretty sure there are more I’m not thinking of.

Goals from last year: Write at least a drabble’s worth of Faith/Giles (check), finish the Buffy/Giles thing (still stalled), get back into the swing of original fic (kind of? I made several sales, anyway).

Goals for this year: Faith/Giles, gosh darn it! I’ve got all these great bits in a file, and they need to be fic-shaped by January 30. Also finish the Illyria fic I’ve been poking at for ages; it needs two, maybe three more really good writing days, and then revision. Finish the Spike character study drabble series. Finish the Christmas project. And, yes, more original fic.

I wrote 75,000 words this year. I finished and posted my first longfic. I got to know a ton of new people. I read some wonderful fic (for which I direct you to my recs posts.

But most importantly, I crawled out of my shell and got to know people. One of my fannish goals last year was to "socialize a bit more." Check. This time last year I was still a shy little noob who stuck her head out and dared to comment on a post every now then. Now I feel like part of the conversation, and I've met a whole bunch of nice, thoughtful, and interesting folks.

So, yay fandom! Yay all of you!

Other goals included finishing and posting 'the crackfic' (that would be Seraph - hurrah!), doing Yuletide again (check), and participating in one or two other ficathons (just Remix, but I eyed the Plot Without Porn and Darla ficathons longingly).

Opinions that've changed in the past year: Writing Seraph, I learned to stop worrying and love S4 in all its hokey, fluffy, angst-free glory. I also understand and like Buffy-the-character a lot more than I did this time last year. And Restless has gone from "Well, that was audacious. And pretentious," to being one of my top five favorite episodes of the series.

Fannish surprises: Faith/Giles. Never even thought of them before, and then No Future For You slapped me in the face with this fabulous new ship. Now I can't get enough.

Goals for this year: Write the Buffy/Giles piece that's been bugging me for months. Write some Faith/Giles, even if it's just a drabble. Otherwise, I want to get back in the rhythm of my original fic writing. I pretty much took last year off to work on Seraph, and I'd like to write a bunch of new material for submission purposes.
