Yesterday was the 20th anniversary of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I didn't start watching it until 2008, but I watched the entire run that year, and the rest is history. If it weren't for Buffy I wouldn't be in fandom, and if it weren't for fandom I almost certainly would not be feminist, liberal, or out. I also wouldn't have any of you. It is literally impossible for me to imagine where I would be today if it weren't for this one show about a teenage girl fighting vampires.

I love you all. <3
snickfic: text: Sign number 23 that you're obsessed with hockey: you think the proper way to spell the plural of leaf" is "leafs" (hockey)
* I <3 my Pinboard so much. So much, you guys. Never leave me.

* I typed up a bunch of cracky, tropey female-centric recs for someone, as those are fics very dear to my heart, and ahhhh I'd forgotten how much I love writing in canons with women. I miss it, y'all. In the meantime, I might add to that list and post it here, if I get around to it.

* Speaking of recs: I have so many hockey recs I need to make. So many.

* Have I mentioned that I <3 the hockey kinkmeme recently? I DO. (This Eichel/McDavid soulbonding WIP is currently making me very happy.) Right now there's a "Kinkfest" that's sort of being hosted there, info here; it's extremely informal and boils down to "write a kinky thing in this two-week period, and we'll add it to the masterlist." I shall try to come up with something.

* I have been cooking! Emphasis on veggies, just because. It turns out roasting zucchini, carrots, and celery and then sticking them in spaghetti sauce makes for MUCH MORE EXCITING pasta. I'm going to have to experiment with that a lot more. Especially as I now have half a pound of arugula I need to use by, like, this weekend. (Suggestions welcome.)

* O Capdad, My Capdad: the Daddening - an explanation of how (almost) every single captain in the NHL is like Dad.

* bb Geno. YOU GUYS.

* Do you want to watch 5+ minutes of bridge vs. trucks? Of course you do. (Spoiler: the bridge wins every time.)

* The Discovery Channel Twitter trolled the Pens Twitter, and it was the best.

Perhaps we are over the worst of it? My throat feels better, and I can breathe pretty okay.

I spent most of this evening eating popcorn, updating my fic masterlist (for the first time in eight months), and watching Due South, which I own the second season of solely because it was $4 at the grocery store. No, really. I tried the first season a couple of years ago and couldn't get into it, but this second season was exactly what was needed on a sick day: tropey and a little bit plotty but never actually tense. And I mean, in the season opener we are stranded in the wilderness and one of us is blind; in the next ep we get locked in a bank vault; in the third ep we get ourselves arrested - both of us independently - so we can go to prison and investigate a witness whose testimony changed. It's hard to beat the classics.

I also watched another ep of Sleepy Hollow, which makes three total. The cast is delightful in every way, as Tumblr promised me. Unfortunately the plots are so very silly, folks. I suffered through several seasons of SPN butchering the biblical apocalypse and several more of aftermath, and only because I already had three seasons worth of emotional investment in the show. I don't know that I'm willing to do it again, especially when the show is so silly in all its other plotting, too. Seriously, there's a Revolution-era ammunition storage tunnel between the police station and the armory, which apparently no one knew about because 200-year-old ammunition was still stacked in a corner (talk about fire hazard), and yet this tunnel has a metal grate walkway? Really, show?

I also went to the library and brought back many books - in particular some more Gail Simone things, the first two volumes of Morning Glories, and the first volume of China Mieville's Dial H. Will report back.

1. I am making some progress on bb. I had a lot of ambitions for this fic, but several people have reminded me that putting that kind of pressure on myself can stunt the creativity. So, I'm just going to treat it like idfic (although that only helps so much, because I take my idfic kinda seriously, too).

2. I have been extremely productive today. I swept and mopped floors, I sorted the huge pile of papers on my bedroom floor into the filing cabinet I bought for $2 at the garage sale, I put bunches of junk into the garage and/or the trash, and I cleaned my bathroom. This is about about as much housework as I generally do in a month. GO ME. Of course, I quite possibly won't do any more until next month...

3. I told myself I could not buy a Marvel Unlimited pass for myself until bb was done. So much for that. I have to say, though, THANK YOU INTERNET, because I now have years and years of Marvel back issues available for my reading pleasure. It's not perfect; the special panel-by-panel reader has some bugs, and one issue I was reading didn't show any of the narrative text, for some reason. Still. I'm going to try it for the month, and if it I'm still reading at the end of it, I switch to an annual subscription (= much much cheaper).

Which brings us to...

4. THINGS I'VE BEEN READING. (I see this being a regular feature on this blog from now on.)

The Indestructible Hulk #1 )

X-23: Innocence Lost )

There's sort of a "keep LJ/DW fandom alive!" friending meme happening (here on DW and here on LJ). I've friended/subscribed to a few new folks; perhaps I shall write a little introductory something here later. Or perhaps not.

All that's left is finals, guys, and all my writing deadlines are past, and I plan to do nothing else with this year but finish up school and enjoy the holidays. (Today, hopefully, I shall finish my annual rewatch of Hogfather. About which there may also be a post. Or not.)
snickfic: On With the Exposition (Scoobies exposition)
1. The real reason I don't read fic on, even when it's recced: the interface is so ugly. I just can't bear to read things on it.

2. I've somehow managed to lock my cat in the bathroom. This despite the fact that our bathroom doors don't have locks. Fortunately she has a litter box and water, because we've been having anti-social kitty troubles and so one of them always spends the night in the bathroom anyway, but. Poor kitty! And tomorrow I'll call the office - hopefully we have a maintenance guy around on the weekend. Otherwise I'll have to take the doorknob apart myself, I guess.

3. Aside from Supernatural, I don't think I've watched an episode of anything since the Ringer pilot. Wow am I bad at TV. But I've read plenty of fanfic! And also other things.
snickfic: Giles, Buffy: since the beginning of time (Giles Buffy men and women)
I'm worried that this post is going to come across as ridiculously earnest. This isn't the humorous "Everything I know, I learned from fandom" post, nor the schmoopy "What fandom means to me" post, although I kind of want to write one of those, too.

This is the post wherein I confess to learning a whole lot of things from my three years in fandom that I never properly understood before. Some I feel like I should have known already - from college, maybe. Instead I learned it here, because everything is more fun with fandom. Right?

things what I learned in fandom )

TL;DR: I owe fandom a lot, you guys. It's a little bit embarrassing how much. FANDOM. *hugs*

In half an hour I am going to watch actual TV on an actual television AS IT ACTUALLY AIRS.

This is something of a novelty; I haven't done it since 2008, I think.

As I saw someone explain to someone else recently: tumblr is like forwarding. It's signal boosting. It's for all the times you want to say, "Hey, look at this nifty thing!" without wanting to say anything terribly in-depth about the nifty thing. Nifty thing might be a fannish gif or picspam, but it might also be a song you just discovered on YouTube or the link to a great new fic or elegant minimalist covers of Tolkien novels.

Now I am trying to decide what to do with this newfound knowledge. In the meantime, does anyone have any favorite art/design/photography people on tumblr?

Here's the problem with updates to software: all the old things you liked (add-ons, shortcuts) don't work anymore, and you don't yet know all the new stuff that might or might not make up for the stuff that's missing.

Is there any way I can go back to Firefox 3.6.whatever that I was on before without just uninstalling, thereby losing all my saved passwords and bookmarks and such?
