Ah, summer

snickfic: Gamora profile (mcu)
That time when a young-ish woman's thoughts turn to superheroes and X-Men comics and Latin rock. (This is not a joke, my interests really are seasonal like this, and those really are my regular summer obsessions.) Right now the nostalgia for last summer's MCU femslash spiral is hitting me HARD. And lo and behold, I have a new GotG movie's worth of femslash to look for!

If you've got fic recs for either of those, btw, I'm all years. (Haven't seen AoU, Civil War, Agents of Shield, or the Netflix shows, though.)
snickfic: girl reading on bench (mood reading)
Most of these have been sitting in my bookmarks for a while, waiting for a recs theme that fit. Well, here's one: these are fics that get my VERY VERY HIGHEST recommendation. These are flat-out some of the best fics I have ever read. Or at least some of the ones I liked the most.

With No Lodestar in Sight by [archiveofourown.org profile] lindentree - True Grit, Mattie/LeBeouf, 82k.
Eighty-two thousand glorious words of plotty post-canon adventures and slow-burn romance. I cannot even tell you how much I love this fic. The author captures Mattie's voice and scalpel-like pragmaticism perfectly, and Rooster Cogburn is in it, and also did I mentioned adventures? And plot? This is everything I could have dreamed of in a post-canon shipfic, and it is so, so satisfying.

Counterfeit and Counterpart by [archiveofourown.org profile] Frea_O - MCU, Maria+Natasha friendship, 28k.
It's very rare that fic depicts friendship with as much care and nuance and with as many emotional complications as romance gets, but this fic does. This is a prickly friendship, sometimes two steps forward and one step back. And don't let the summary fool you - this is not a series of unrelated vignettes, but a story with a purpose. Maria is cranky and great, and there's a road trip at the end that's just marvelous. This whole fic is marvelous

A Beginner's Guide to Communing with the Dead by [archiveofourown.org profile] suspiciousflashlight - SPN, Dean/Castiel, 77k
This is an urban fantasy AU where Dean is a work-worn cop haunted, literally and figuratively, by the murder of one Jo Harvelle, and who accidentally summons an angel to his attic. And then keeps him there. And convinces him to help Dean solve the murder. It's the worldbuilding and the plot I love this fic for - it is possibly one of the most tightly-plotted fics I have ever read, with definitely one of the best climactic scenes I have ever seen in a fic. Or possibly in fiction.
snickfic: Peggy in diner, Jarvis behind her (agent carter)
Looking through my bookmarks, I see I have a post's worth of these, and now seems like a good time with the new season starting soon-ish.

In the Apartment After the War by [archiveofourown.org profile] Beatrice_Otter
Angie + Peggy, 3k. Just a little apartment exploration and conversation, in which Peggy opens up a little and we get to see things through Angie's eyes. Great Angie voice.

Living Arrangements by [archiveofourown.org profile] Netgirl_y2k
Peggy/Angie, 3k. Angie notices that they're practically married. It takes Peggy a little longer to figure out. Just sweet friends-to-lovers.

Double Exposure (Ten Conversations) by [archiveofourown.org profile] psocoptera
Peggy/Daniel/Jack, 1.3k. It's lovely to hunt as a pair; she might have prowled with Angie, if Daniel hadn't charmed her. Hot and angsty and succinct. Yow.

too many war wounds and not enough wars by [archiveofourown.org profile] paperclipbitch
Jack/Daniel/Sousa, 7k. D/s and psychological wounds. Very satisfying.

As Real Girls Do by [archiveofourown.org profile] scribblemyname
Dottie Underwood, 1.4k. A sharp, satisfying little character study of a character canon left in desperate need of fleshing out. Brings in some Winter Soldier canon in an interesting way, too.
snickfic: Meg Cas kiss closeup (Meg Cas)
[community profile] trickortreatex authors are revealed! I wrote five things, which I'm lumping here all in one post for convenience. I had a lot of fun playing in basically all my fandoms, especially since the Buffy characters I want to write usually aren't eligible for exchanges.

However, out of the bunch I definitely had a couple of favorites: the hockey fic (which at 4k feels absurdly long for a treat in a 300 word exchange, but oh well) and the steampunk Meg/Castiel. Because, you know, steampunk Meg/Castiel. Even if the fic doesn't really have a plot, as such.

When In Doubt, Set It On Fire - hockey RPF, Crosby/Ovechkin, 4000 words
First Sidney tells Alex Consol's ice is cursed. Then he says he has a plan to fix it. Then he stops talking to Alex very much at all, and that's when Alex starts to get worried. -- More monster-y than actual horror, it turned out. Oh well.

bright wings - SPN, Meg/Castiel, 1200 words
Castiel has metal wings. Meg has an oil can. -- AKA the steampunk fic. :DDD

The Beginning of a Beautiful Friendship - SPN, Meg + Bela friendship, 700 words
Meg goes to hell in search of loyal subjects. She thinks she may have found one. -- A treat for [livejournal.com profile] gryfndor_godess, with bonus Meg kvetching of Crowley's redecorating scheme. :D

Enough to Make a Girl Feel All Gooey - BtVS, Buffy/Faith, 500 words
Buffy told Faith to stay in Cleveland. Yeah, right. -- A treat for [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni, theoretically an AU of the Wishverse. Yes, an AU of the AU. Hush.

wherever you go, there you are - MCU, Natasha + Bucky, 500 words
Natasha thought about the places she’d like to hide, given a choice. She ordered them by practicality, and she started at the bottom. -- My first MCU fic! Behold!
snickfic: Gamora profile (mcu)
Says here that we're getting:
* a Captain Marvel movie (FINALLY)
* a Black Panther movie (FINALLY)
* two Avengers 3 movies (cha-ching)
* Captain America 3: Civil War (...it could be good. No, it could be, if it follows the comics continuity the way PotC: On Stranger Tides followed the Tim Powers novel. Which is say, by stealing the title and ditching EVERYTHING ELSE)

And, uh, some other stuff. I dunno. *flails feebly*

Match Point by [personal profile] salmon_pink
Pepper/Sif, one-shot. First they spar, then they have sex very attractively. And there's humor, too!

The Ties That Bind by [archiveofourown.org profile] Odsbodskins
Steve/Bucky + Natasha, a/b/o, 26k. One of my favorite a/b/o fics to appear in quite some time, with tons of interesting worldbuilding (including text excerpts! One from Mary Roach, even!) dealing with lots of aspects of a/b/o life that don't seem to turn up very often. Also has omega!Steve, which immediately endeared the fic to me. Also has Steve and Natasha off missioning together, which made me ridiculously happy. I love Natasha in this. I love everything in this.

Fair warning, this was written pre-Winter Soldier, so it's definitely an AU in the jossed sense. Has a lot of events inspired by comics stuff, but mixed and matched, so no comics knowledge necessary.

Re-Habituation by [archiveofourown.org profile] downjune
Bucky/Natasha, a/b/o, 3k. This isn't shippy in the strict sense; it's about Natasha exploring a part of herself that was previously only controlled and exploited, and doing that exploration with someone she trusts. I especially like the identity stuff this fic explores, and I tend to be a sucker for sex-between-friends scenarios like this one. Just neat.

Experiment in red by [archiveofourown.org profile] sevenofspade
Bucky+Wanda gen, 4k. The Winter Soldier makes friends with one of HYDRA's experiments. I LOVE unexpected moments of grace and friends found in unexpected places, and this has that in spades. It also deals a lot with the terrible things, including brainwashing, that happen to both Wanda and Bucky, so be forewarned. (I have the uncomfortable feeling that this fic is far kinder and more complex in its characterization of Wanda than canon is going to be. >:( )

measure of affection by [archiveofourown.org profile] bullroars
GotG team gen, 1.5k. drax the destroyer does not need a hug. Neat happy-feeling gen where the team takes care of its own, however fumblingly. Very sweet.

All This Red Tape by [archiveofourown.org profile] TigerDragon
girl!Peter/Gamora, 3.5k In which the girls are still working out how they work together, in both the feelings department and the pants department. There's some low-key xeno here for those that like it, and just a lot of very appealing fumbling stops and starts as Gamora and Piper Quill try to figure each other out.
snickfic: (Yuletide)
YULETIDE. I thought I was excited last year, and yet somehow this year I am even more excited. Last year I comfortably found four things to request; this year I had to squeeze and squeeze before I managed to get my requests down to six.

I hope that you, dear author, are feeling similarly excited. I'm thrilled to have you writing something for me, and the fact that you offered one of these fandoms at all tells me that you have excellent taste. I'm so excited to read whatever it is you choose to write!

Also: personally, when I write for really small fandoms I end up putting all this pressure on myself to write The Definitive Fic in the fandom, but that's silly. If you feel the same, please be assured that I'm not hoping for the fic, just a fic. :)

So, on with the requests.

Instarec: [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni WROTE ME BTVS/HOCKEY FIC. :DDD It is The Chains They Revere, and in it Sid and Geno meet Faith and Lydia Chalmers and some slayers and also stop a Hellmouth eruption, and also there is pining, and it is DELIGHTFUL. It pleases me ridiculously, and everyone should read it.

Very old rec: The Kids Aren't Alright, longform in-universe journalism about Tony Stark and Stark Industries. So, meta fic, very convincingly written. I read it years ago, shortly after the first movie came out I think, and just now found it again.
snickfic: Spaceman Spiff about to crash his spaceship (mood sf)
I went and saw it! Clearly Marvel is doing something right, because they have gotten 100% of my theater dollars so far this year. (That would be for Cap 2 and this, mind.)

Unspoilery: I see the flaws, and yet, FUNNY SPACE OPERA. BE STILL MY HEART. I feel like I haven't seen a proper big-budget space opera since Revenge of the Sith. Can that be right? Woe.

Spoilery )

I need an MCU icon, maybe.

EDIT: FYI, there's kinkmeme for Guardians of the Galaxy and other cosmic Marvel, including comics. Not much fic yet, but half of the prompts there are the most adorable kink prompts I have ever seen.
snickfic: (Saga)
Somehow there are suddenly tons of events I can write and request comics for! So exciting!

[livejournal.com profile] marvelgrabbag is a promptfest, where you make 4-5 Marvel-related prompts and then later claim at least one prompt for your very own. The signup process is not the most intuitive, because signups are on AO3 for claims that will be on LJ, but whatever. Here's the list of prompts so far. Anyone who's been paid any attention to any of my fest signups in the last six months will recognize most of my prompts, and anyone who knows me at all will recognize the rest. :D

Night on Fic Mountain is Yuletide in the summer, basically. For all of us who have trouble participating in Yuletide as much as we'd like because of holidays/family/dial-up, this is THE PERFECT THING. I'm super excited about the comics fandoms that've been nominated.

Not Prime Time, the fest for mid-size fandoms is running again this year. Last near I had no fandoms that qualified; this year, between comics and hockey, I have plenty! I'M GOING TO ASK FOR HOCKEY FIC. I... may already have my entire Dear Author letter written.

Meanwhile, for more immediate gratification, I already mentioned MCU + all kinds of comics kink meme, for which you should prompt things so I have something to fill. Also there's [livejournal.com profile] marvel_cinekink, which is MCU only and therefore not so relevant to my interests but which nonetheless presently features this WIP which delves into the Winter Soldier's post-movie identity issues in lots of delicious hurty ways.
snickfic: half-portrait of Natasha (art by Noto) (Natasha)
I have [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen words! Words I like! I know exactly what I want to do with this fic and have known since a day after I got the assignment, and it is a thing I can do without the handwringing that began my Beyond Panels assignment, and I am altogether very pleased. Plus the prompt gives me an excuse to write an aspect of canon I've been wanting to write for quite a while. YAY ALL AROUND.

Upcoming films, because I went to see Winter Soldier yesterday and there trailers.
* Lucy, with body horror and ScarJo with out-of-control powers? And also Morgan Freeman? YES PLEASE I WILL WATCH THE HECK OUT OF THAT. Even though the ~science is clearly ridiculous.

* Godzilla looks very silly, but also probably cooler than the last Godzilla remake, and I am a TOTAL SUCKER for giant megafauna which I may have mentioned, so. Also Bryan Cranston, what even.

* Maleficient looks more interesting than I expected. I can see why people have been getting a femslash vibe from it. I will definitely wait on reviews, though.

--

Speaking of, yes, I saw Winter Soldier! Unspoilery version: I enjoyed it quite a bit, for pretty much exactly the reasons I expected to enjoy it.

snickfic: half-portrait of Natasha (art by Noto) (Natasha)
So now I really need a hockey RPF/Avengers crossover where somehow the Penguins are involved in international intrigue and Natasha drops in to save the day and then she and Geno hang out afterwards and are comfortably Russian at each other.

In other news, things I have learned about hockey RPF:
* Food is really, really important. No fic is complete without a scene of food porn. And by that I mean people cooking and eating and moaning over food, not, like, applying it to their bodies for someone to lick off.

* The only thing more important than food is pining. SO MUCH PINING. ALL THE PINING.

* Native Russian speakers are allergic to articles, definite or indefinite. They're also fond of speaking in third person about the person to whom they are speaking at the time.

* A chirp is a kind of insult among hockey players, which leads to a lot of mental images of a lot of big rugged athletes twittering at one another.

* Hockey fandom is apparently uninterested in h/c as a genre, which surprises me given how often the fics circle around players being injured (partly because it saves the authors from having to write any actual hockey, and partly because apparently this particular duo has spent a lot of their respective careers being seriously injured).
snickfic: [Hawkeye] Kate looking over the top of her sunglasses (Kate)
Marvel is teaming up with Netflix to make four 13-ep series, starring Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage, respectively.

At this point I've about decided I just don't care about comics stories outside the medium of comics, but nonetheless this seems pretty cool. The street-level heroics of these guys interest me a lot more than the Avengers' saving-the-world shtick or the bloodless, not-shady-at-all bureaucracy SHIELD seems to have turned out to be (she says, having only watched the pilot). Also, series starring a lady! Series starring a black guy! Feats that neither Marvel nor DC have managed in quite a long while.

Vulture.com neatly lays out how much better Marvel comics are about diversity than Marvel movies.

Personally, if I'd known there were so many awesome women running around superhero comics, I might have tried them ages ago. And there's other kinds of diversity, too - of the six women in the all-women X-Men comic, two of them are non-white (plus Psylocke, but she's tricky), and within a few issues we're adding an Arab-American character to the team and further developing a key Indian-American (I think?) secondary character. I have been keeping less track of LGBT characters, but there are several gay boys and a bi character on the Young Avengers team, another bi character in Avengers Arena, Bling in X-Men is gay, over in Spider-land the Scarlet Spider is gay, X-man Northstar married his boyfriend last year (take that, DC), and I know there are more I'm not thinking of. FF has a trans character, too.

All of which isn't to say that Marvel comics are perfect. No. But they're a heck of a lot better at this kind of thing than the movies.
snickfic: close-up crop of Storm (drawn by Ibanez) (x-men)
1. Spiral is my new winner of the Most Horrifying Backstory Ever award. I've been reading her wiki entry, and apparently she starts out as Longshot's perfectly normal human girlfriend ('Rita Wayword,' heh), who in the course of the comic is kidnapped and enslaved, given non-con body modifications, traumatized so badly her hair turned white, and then 'driven insane' (what even) to the point of villainy, after which she merrily maims and kills for next ~25 years of comics.

Like. WHAT EVEN. That's your villain? I am now so much more excited that Sam Humphries is working in Uncanny X-Force to make her sympathetic again (even though there is NO EXCUSE for her ever being non-sympathetic in the first place).

2. FYI, Marvel Unlimited has a bunch of old Avengers comics available to read for free this month, on account of it's the Avengers 50th anniversary. They seem to have a selection spanning all the decades. No special plug-in or anything required.

3. Somehow I seem to have fallen in love with comics while continuing to be mostly indifferent to the movies based on them. Like, Avengers was fine entertainment for an afternoon, and I recall liking X2 okay (mostly, let's face it, because of Hugh Jackson, although I also quite liked Nightcrawler), but the movies persist in being about people I don't care about.

4. That said, I'm pretty excited for the new Captain America movie next spring. Chris Evans is nice to look at (even if not my usual type), I'm looking forward to Steve navigating the modern world, and apparently there's lots of Steve and Natasha being bros against the world, which I am ALL FOR. In interviews, Chris has been saying that he sees the Steve+Natasha relationship as the heart of the movie, to which I am all ♥.♥
