Snick's somewhat-monthly reaction post to solicits news returns!

Image
* SAGAAAAA. Saga is back, as is almost the entire cast! :DDDD

* This new #1 sounds intriguing: The Empty, by Jimmy Robinson: Tanoor lives in an empty apocalyptic world of poison and decay. Her village is all that remains of humanity as they struggle against mutant beasts and rotting bones. But Tanoor finds a chance to save her people when a stranger drifts into town. A stranger armed with the power to grow life from death. A stranger who could change the world—if Tanoor can keep them alive in the deadly world of The Empty.

* Likewise Postal by Hill/Hawkins and Goodhart: The townsfolk of Eden, Wyoming wake up to the first official murder the town has seen in 25 years. Their reaction to this isn’t normal, and there’s a reason for that. Eden operates as a haven for fugitive criminals who remain here while new identities, often including facial reconstruction, are created for them. There is zero tolerance for any illegal activity that might draw attention to the town and an “official murder” is the last thing they want. A single, tight-knit family runs Eden with the youngest oddball son Mark Shiffron overseeing the postal branch, the only means of shipping in or out of the city.

* Lots of next issues for series I'm enjoying, including East of West, The Wicked + the Divine, Lazarus (although I'm behind on that).

Marvel
* Elektra canceled. The art was so pretty, but the story was so cold. IDK. I wanted to love it.

* Lots of new female-led titles: Spider-Gwen, Silk (both Spider-man affiliated, kind of? Spider-Gwen is AU somehow), and by then we'll be three issues into Angela: Assassin of Asgard, which I must say is not a book that I'm filled with hope for, although I do like women are involved in both the writing and the arting.

* Jorge Molina is taking a shift (or taking over?) on Thor. Given the kind of style he had when he filled in on X-Force, I think he'll be a good fit, especially if they keep the same colorist. Solicit seems to imply that we still don't know new Thor's identity?!

* MS MARVEL VERSUS LOKI. ALL MY DREAMS ARE COME TRUE. I mean, just look at this cover. (Sad we don't have Jake Wyatt back, though - artist this issue is Takeshi Miyazawa, whom I'm not familiar with.)

* I will be interested to read the rest of X-Force once it finally comes to MU. This Fantomex-as-antagonist thing seems designed to make me unhappy, but Spurrier is a clever and complex writer. IDK.

* Storm #8 - Phil Briones arting this issue. I recall quite liking his work on Humphries' UXF, although not as well as I've liked Ibanez.

I've been super excited about this book since I first started seeing art for it, and I was not disappointed.

Marvel April solicits are out. My feelings:
* Gosh, I hate that cover art on X-Men. HATE. Jubilee's so shiny, her limbs are weirdly elongated, she has exactly the same body as every other Dodson cover woman ever (except for being slightly less busty than some, so we should give thanks for small favors), and there's no background. Ugh. Dodsons, Dodsons, go away.

* Speaking of art, we're onto yet another new artist for that title, Clay Mann this time. I wonder if the plan was originally to rotate in a new artist every three issues, or if Marvel has decided to turn a bug into a feature, or what. Mann will be the fifth artist in 13 issues.

* However, I am pleased that we're getting more story about Shogo's backstory.

* I don't know Moon Knight from a hole in the ground, but the covers, the interiors I've seen, and the silly overhype ("The best new comic of 2014," what) reeeally make me want to pick it up. And it's Warren Ellis, whom I frequently like quite a lot.

* ELEKTRA. Finally solicited, yay. Cannot wait to get my hands on that one. Cannot wait to just see some del Mundo interiors on that one.

* So you all know Nightcrawler has a new ongoing, yes? Written by Claremont, no less. I doubt I'll care much, but, you know, Nightcrawler.

* Gosh, the X-Force art is SO UGLY. If the writing turns out to be good, then fingers crossed that we'll switch artists out pretty fast.

* Aaand we're back to Greg Land on Mighty Avengers. Sigh.

* More Annie Wu (and therefore Kate) on Hawkeye. I haven't been excited about how Fraction's written Kate lately, but the fact that she's sharing the title with Clint these days still makes me happy, and I like Wu's work quite a lot.

In other news, I just realized that the Captain America and Black Widow series I was enthusing about the other day does not have its last two issue on MU, despite originally being released over a year ago. (Usually things go up on MU after six months.) I had already decided I needed a trade, but perhaps I will be getting it sooner rather than later. Grr.

* In the department of most tenuous relationship to comics, [personal profile] beer_good_foamy has an excellent rant about ambition and expectations in TV re: Agents of SHIELD. (Disclaimer: my dislike for that show and pleasure in people complaining about it may be disproportionate to its actual failings.)

* Elektra has switched writers (from Zeb Wells to Haden Blackman, whom I've never heard of) and been moved back to April, says Marvel EIC Axel Alonso. There's also concept art at that link from Mike del Mundo, although no interiors, alas.

* The previews for Black Widow #1 and also #2 are so gorgeous I don't even know what to do with myself. God bless Phil Noto. Such a good decision I made, subscribing sight unseen. There's also art from the All New Marvel Now anthology opener and Noto covers for #1, #2, #3 (alligators! or possibly crocodiles!), and #4. *drool*

If I do not fall in love with at least one of the new lady-centric solos, I will be deeply disappointed. (I'd give any two of them to get the Immonen/Schiti Sif book back, but possibly that's a bird in the hand/bush problem.)

New series announced:

She-Hulk
Author: Charles Soule. Good news is that he's an attorney and will be writing about Jen Walters being an attorney. Bad news is that he's been on Thunderbolts for a while now, which I hear is terrible.
Artist: Javier Pulido. He's the back-up artist on Hawkeye, so in my head he's the poor man's David Aja, but I suspect I will quite like him when he's doing his own thing and I'm not continually tempted to compare him to other people.

Black Widow
Author: Nathan Edmondson. I hear he writes a lot of espionage stuff. That's all I got.
Artist: PHIL NOTO. Phil Noto is wonderful, including/especially at women. There is no bad here. Just look at this cover.
Additional Notes: FINALLY. That's all, really.

Elektra
Author: Zeb Wells. The CBR fanboys like him. I know nothing.
Artist: Mike del Mundo. I only know him from that Kitty+Tony short in A+X, which I enjoyed the art for once I got used to it. There's definitely a 'getting used to it' factor involved; his art in that was very stylized, with extremely long and flexible limbs, and so on. Based on that, though, I expect this will be gorgeous.
Additional Notes: I only know Elektra from the Jennifer Garner movie (which was 2/3 bad and 1/3 awesome) and I'm not familiar with the Daredevil 'verse at all.

Captain Marvel "relaunch"
Author: Kelly Sue DeConnick. AKA the same author who is already writing it. I expect you'll continue to like the writing about as well as you've been liking it already.
Artist: David Lopez. He's been filling in on X-Men, and I can't say I'm hugely enthused, but it's possible I'm still just mourning Olivier Coipel's departure. He's more mainstream than Captain Marvel's artists have been lately, which I suspect will be good for the book.
Additional notes: "Relaunch," indeed. Given that this book by this same author was switching out artists every four issues or so anyway, why on earth it would need relaunching is a question only the marketing office can answer.

Silver Surfer
Author: Dan Slott. Again, the CBR fanboys like him. I only know him from Superior Foes of Spider-man, which I didn't care for, but I'm willing to chalk that up to the character selection.
Artist: Mike Allred. Because he's off FF, which I'd much rather have instead, but oh well.
Additional Notes: I have only slightly greater than zero interest in and knowledge of the Silver Surfer, but I'm a firm Allred fan at this point, and the cover of #1 is awfully fun. In general, 'fun' seems to be the keyword for this book, and I'm for that.

There were bunches of other announcements, including, for example, a new X-Factor by Peter David and a new Loki solo written by Mighty Avengers author Al Ewing. Surely someone has a full list by now, but you can get an overview from write-ups of the X-Men panel, the Avengers panel, the Inhumanity/cosmic Marvel panel, and the Spider-man + everything else panel.
