YULETIDE. I thought I was excited last year, and yet somehow this year I am even more excited. Last year I comfortably found four things to request; this year I had to squeeze and squeeze before I managed to get my requests down to six.

I hope that you, dear author, are feeling similarly excited. I'm thrilled to have you writing something for me, and the fact that you offered one of these fandoms at all tells me that you have excellent taste. I'm so excited to read whatever it is you choose to write!

Also: personally, when I write for really small fandoms I end up putting all this pressure on myself to write The Definitive Fic in the fandom, but that's silly. If you feel the same, please be assured that I'm not hoping for the fic, just a fic. :)

So, on with the requests.

Author, thank you so much for writing a fic for me! As you can see, I am ALL ABOUT COMICS right now. I will thrilled to get fic for any of these fandoms. I know I wrote lots more for some of them than others, but that's because I'd already written up requests for some of them for other exchanges. Whichever fandom we matched on, I am excited about!

Eee, archive is open! I am working my way through but I already have a few recs.

Girls' Day Out, FF, ensemble gen
AKA the fic for MEEEE. Darla and Jen take Tong, Onome, and Luna for a girls' day out. Naturally it becomes a more eventful trip than Darla was planning on. It's sweet and adorable and made me happy.

the only place, FF, mostly Scott with background Scott/Darla
This is so lovely, a post-canon fic that's a much more somber approach, specifically to Scott and his depression. A really great mix of zany asides and characterization sharp enough to make you bleed. And yet ultimately hopeful.

(And there's even a THIRD FF fic, but I haven't read it yet. A bounty of riches!)

Gwendolyn being badass, Saga, art
Man, the ATTITUDE Gwen has here. Love the colors, all the little details, and the use of Lying Cat is just perfect. It's must-see.

YAY, comics! I just started reading them in earnest about eight months ago, but I am having a blast. I am so very excited that there's now an exchange just for them, and I am beyond thrilled that you, dear author, are going to write me fic for one of them.

First: If you have a story you've been wanting to write about any of these canons, I would love to read it. I talk a lot (a LOT) below about some of these comics, including lots of suggestions, but they are only meant to help get you started. Any story you've been itching to write for these characters, I would love to read.

Also: personally, when I write really small fandoms I end up putting all this pressure on myself to write The Definitive Fic in the fandom, but that's silly. If you feel the same, please be assured that I'm not hoping for the fic, just a fic. :)

Several people have made noises to me recently about being curious about comics but unsure where to start, and I realized I had never addressed precisely that question before. Here, then, is a list of suggestions as made by someone who's very enthused about comics but only been actively reading them for eight months.

These are all fairly recent comics, some of them still ongoing, which I personally have read and enjoyed and think would be approachable to someone with very little knowledge of comics continuity, either because they're standalone titles (the Image stuff) or because the writers kept away from the continuity tangles of the larger universe inhabited by the characters (the Marvel stuff). I also stuck to stuff that's available in trades, so that you have a hope of acquiring them through your local library. However, they are all also available via Comixology, the one-stop shop for digital comics by the big publishers.

Here is some info/squee about things I would like people to watch/read/make for [livejournal.com profile] love_resolution! A bunch of the text is nabbed from other posts I've made, so if it looks familiar to some of you, that's why.

EDIT: I'm adding one more super big wish right here at the top, and that's if you become or are already familiar with any of the TV/books/comics I mention below, that you post about them on your journal. I have several friends who've already read Seraphina, for example, and I would LOVE to have them write rambly squee or meta or whatever about it, so I can jump in and squee, too. So even if you've already watched/read the thing I'm requesting, you can still totally fulfill one of my wishes!!

I just caught up on reading stuff from the last three weeks or so.

First, above the cut: I subscribed to Loki: Agent of Asgard almost solely because of how impressed I've been with Al Ewing's work on Mighty Avengers. Frankly, Mighty Avengers seems to have most everything against it: it's got Greg Land on art and a relative unknown writing, its first three issues were tied up in a crossover that no one I know paid any attention to, and I, personally, have very little interest in the Avengers side of the Marvel universe. And yet Ewing keeps me consistently entertained while introducing and juggling a cast of characters I have almost no familiarity in. Even the Infinity tie-in arc felt self-contained enough to be comprehensible.

(Not that this is so much down to Ewing, but I also, it must be said, enjoy the fact of characters of color not only being the majority, but also walking on and off panel in cameos, completely unremarked upon. It's easy for me to forget how many such Marvel characters there are, because so often there's only one or two of them to a team.)

I totally understand if you just can't take the Land art on this book, but at the very least EVERYONE should pick up the three issues Valerio Schiti is arting, starting in February. And also everyone who's even marginally interested in the Loki comic should give it a closer look, because I expect Ewing to do good things on it.

Now, onto vaguely spoilery things.

My Yuletide

Yuletide authors are revealed. I see that fellow Marvel enthusiast and recent new friend [livejournal.com profile] ladymercury_10 wrote my lovely lovely FF fic. I was pretty sure you had, because a) you didn't comment on or kudos it, and b) the date was fairly early in mid-December. (I don't know why it took so long to appear on my "gifts" list - maybe the tag wranglers hadn't wrangled the fandom yet? IDK. You must have been so confused!)

I signed up for Yuletide this year because I wanted to write (and receive!) comics fic, and write it I did. I wrote four pieces, about 6k words total, for FF and Saga and had a delightful time. I will talk about them a bunch more individually later, but for now, links:

Pitching the Woo, FF, Scott/Darla, which was my pinch hit for [livejournal.com profile] tigrrrmilk
Microbe tours and VIP concert tickets are totally things friends do for each other. Right? (In which Darla and Scott spend a lot of time being oblivious to the nature of their relationship.)

Lying to a Lying Cat, Saga, Sophie and Lying Cat, my main gift for [personal profile] andraste
After what happened on the fruit planet, Sophie's not sure Lying Cat will ever be friends with her again. (spoilers for #16)

Not a Hound, Saga, The Will and Lying Cat, my treat/deleted scene for [personal profile] andraste
He pulled his heartbreaker out of its holster, and then considered further and brandished a knife with his other hand. Not that that’d help him much if it turned out the thing spit acid or was fixing to explode, but odds were he wouldn’t run into two biogenetic bombs in one month, right?

“Hey, dog,” he said.

Better in Blue, Saga, Alana/Marko, smutty language porn/actual porn treat for [personal profile] were_duck
Alana is still discovering all the ways she and Marko are different.

So, Yuletide! I got the most wonderful fic written for FF, the Fraction/Allred comic: and now we are many places, a Scott-POV fic about one disastrous day at the Future Foundation. The Scott voice is wonderful, the kids are all wonderful (to read about, possibly not to be in charge of), Jennifer steals every scene she is in, there's sweet hints of Scott/Darla - it is absolutely perfect. If you know the comic, this is not to be missed.

(Also, based on circumstantial evidence I have a strong suspicion that I know who wrote it, but I shall say no more.)

I've been poking about in interesting fandoms, hopefully for the sake of compiling a recs list. Right now I'm knee-deep in Orphan Black fic. Will report back, of course. :) The full list of Yuletide fandoms is here, and the Madness (<1k words) fandoms are here. Go explore the goodies! I ended up writing three fics in the main collection and one in Madness; if you guess any of them, you win a virtual cookie. \o/

Meanwhile, if you're interested in comics specifically, the good folks at [livejournal.com profile] comicstore_news have helpfully compiled a complete list of comics-related Yuletide fic (excluding Madness fics).

I quickfast edited this one last time on Friday October 18 - just the general likes/dislikes. I thought I had the whole weekend to fiddle before assignments went out!

First: If you have a story you've been wanting to write about any of these canons, I would love to read it. I talk a lot (a LOT) below about some of these comics, including lots of suggestions, but they are only meant to help get you started. Any story you've been itching to write for these characters, I would love to read.

Also, you definitely don't need to write all the characters listed for any of these canons. I've picked people I like to give you variety, but feel free to zoom in on just one or two.

Another thing: personally, when I write really small fandoms I end up putting all this pressure on myself to write The Definitive Fic in the fandom, but that's silly. If you feel the same, please be assured that I'm not hoping for the fic, just a fic. :)

And finally, I wrote a lot more about some of these canons than others, but I seriously will be thrilled with fic for any of them. I haven't done Yuletide for several years, and I signed up this year specifically because I've fallen in love with comics. Whatever you write for me, I will be excited about. :)

It changes a person's perspective on the mainstream superhero comics to realize that most of them cost $1 more than an issue of Saga. Like, "This looks moderately interesting, but is it a whole dollar more interesting than Saga?" The answer will nearly always be no.

(And oddly, most of the ones for which the answer might conceivably be yes, like Hawkeye and FF and Young Avengers, are in Marvel's lower price bracket. WHO KNOWS.)

I have discovered that I can load a comic from Marvel Unlimited at the library and then read it in the unconnected comfort of home. W00t!
