As of December 23, I was sure that I wasn't going to manage to submit anything to the collection this year, but then on Christmas Eve I saw a signup on the pinch hitter prompts post that somehow got the gears moving, and so I wrote some Steve/Nancy/Jonathan for Stranger Things, a ship I'd been wanting to write ever sine I first saw the show.

objects in the mirror - Stranger Things, Steve/Nancy/Jonathan, 2.5k
Jonathan has no fucking idea why Nancy and Steve gave him the Nikon. He doesn't know why they're so insistent on seeing the pictures he takes, either.

And then an hour before Madness opened I got an idea for a Saga drabble. So, at final count, I managed TWO fics in the YT collection! \o/

if you want to tell the news, you have to fucking live - Saga, Upsher/Doff, drabble

My focus this Yuletide has been largely space stuff, stuff with lots of focus on female characters, or both, which informs most of this list. (I have been having the BEST time, too. I'm going to use this strategy every year.)

Guys, I finally got a chance to read my [livejournal.com profile] rarepairfest, fic, and it is AMAAAAAZING. It is The Honey Trap, and it is 1800 words of Stalk/Brand via Raymond Chandler, where The Brand is our gumshoe and The Stalk is that bad idea that keeps coming back. The voices are FANTASTIC, and the xeno sex is hot, and I am so happy.

If you're into Saga at all, you have to read.
snickfic: (Gwendolyn)
Fic written for the Everywoman exchange. I finally managed to write a little Brand/Stalk noir! More or less! I feel like the ending is really weak, but :PPP

On the plus side, my recip liked it and pointed out what an excellent piano player The Stalk would surely be in a jazz bar of some kind, and just, EEEEE YES PLEASE.

Ms Marvel through #12 - I feel like I missed an issue in there? #10 maybe? This is as cute as ever, although the Loki issue was the definition of filler.

The Wicked + the Divine through #8 - I feel like I missed an issue here, too. Also, am I supposed to be doing outside research? Because I am getting more and more lost among the pantheon. I have no idea what happened in this issues, basically, and I'm not sure how much longer McKelvie's pencils and Wilson's colors are going to tide me over.

Black Widow through #14 - this is fine? This is fine. We're gearing up to a confrontation with Chaos, finally, thank goodness.

Ody-C through #2 - I have broken up with this comic. Yes, at issue 2. I was so excited for "genderswapped Odyssey" and Fraction killed that enthusiasm dead in one. fell. swoop.

Saga through #25 - EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE. /o\ Except the dragon hunt; that's going pretty okay so far. (I'm side-eyeing that "swelled head" comment something fierce, though.)

Sooo, one of my fannish resolutions for the year was to write more Saga fic, but especially in fandoms this small, it helps my motivation a LOT to write for a specific person (if for no other reason than because I'm likely to get at least one comment!). So if you follow me and are interested, I would like to write you a Saga fic!

FYI I find it easier to work with "What if" or "What happened when" scenarios, as opposed to prompts that are like, "Write something about The Stalk." Moods or settings can be helpful, too, though. And obviously if you have some particular fic you want, I would like to try and accommodate you.

Basically: PLEASE LEAVE ME SAGA PROMPTS. :D

my Yuletide

snickfic: (Saga)
So I wrote three fics for YT! Two Saga (I bet NO ONE saw that one coming, after the sudden and apparently unwarranted burst of Saga posting I did about two weeks ago...) and one for a little-known horror movie called Decoys

If Wishes Were Fishes, Saga, The Stalk/The Will, 4.6k
In which The Will and The Stalk partner up for a job on the steampunk planet. This was my main assignment for [tumblr.com profile] pinstripesuit, whose request was "The Will (finally) has a good day." At first I thought this was going to have to mean fluff, and I am TERRIBLE at writing fluff on purpose (or possibly I just hate the process), but then a friend commented on what a wide-open prompt that was, and I realized, oh, it kinda was. So instead we got this assassins-on-the-job thing, with costumes and banter and snark and shippiness and maybe some stealth feelings. (And no spoilers, btw; if you've read the first volume you're good.)

Meet-Cute, Saga, Klara/Barr, 1.3k
I was determined to write at least one Saga treat, and this turned out to be it, Klara and Barr's first meeting at that youth hostel at the Craters, although it's really more an excuse to write about Klara's mom and also a coffee plant that likes sex jokes.

I Dated a Tentacle Babe from Outer Space, Decoys, Roger/Constance, 7.4k
I discovered this movie via someone talking it up during noms, and I watched it on account of CANON XENO HET MPREG, for this ship that is absolutely adorable. And then I wrote a ton of words of fix-it fic that is possibly the least filtered my id has ever been. Which is to say, a lot of cute in the midst of weird and a lot of mpreg. (I'll probably work up a promo post for this movie, because it's not exactly GOOD but it's quirky and its treatment of certain things is unexpectedly complicated, and I want you all to watch it and then talk to me about it.)
snickfic: text: Geno 71, I'm Score (geno)
This was the year of ALL THE FANDOMS and ALL THE EXCHANGES. I didn’t so much mind hopping and skipping around fandoms, but my first and foremost goal for next year is FEWER EXCHANGES.

Anyway, as a result of those two things, my writing has been kind of fragmented. I ended up posting 75k words in finished fic, which is down just a tidge from last year and included several exchange fics I was really happy with. I ended up writing 21 fics - 4 hockey, 4 SPN, 3 Buffyverse, 3 Marvel comics, 2 Saga, 1 SPN RPF, 1 MCU, 1 Downton Abbey, and 1 Decoys (movie).

In addition, I wrote somewhere between 30 and 40k this year on various other fic projects that have not yet seen the light of day, which is a little frustrating. One of my goals for the new year will definitely be to get some of those finished up and out into the world.

Below the cut I go into a LOT more detail, because these retrospective things are better than cake.

snickfic: (Saga)
YOU GUYS. Check out this article with bunches of concept sketches. See what kind of hair Alana might have had! See Marko's piratical alternative costume design. SEE HOW HE ALMOST HAD A TAIL.

This is fantastic stuff. I love seeing the could-have-beens.
snickfic: (Yuletide)
I got TWO YT gifts! My main gift, So Goddamned Beautiful (Saga, 4.6k words) is pretty much EVERYTHING I HAVE EVER DREAMED OF in Alana/Marko and more besides, with great character voices and insight and sexy vignettes and development of setting and EVERYTHING, and also it is mpreg. So it is pretty much the best ever, and if you like Saga, YOU ALSO SHOULD READ IT.

AND I got a treat, A Tale of Two Thieves, (Uncanny X-Force, 2.3k), which Betsy/Cluster after I'd just about given up on ever getting Betsy fic. It's a sweet fic that finds them finding each other again after the events in Humphries' run, even though Betsy is still trying to decide whether she wants to be found.

Recs of things not gifted by me probably coming tomorrow!
snickfic: (Saga)
One piece of Saga meta I have seen is this panel discussion of the first three volumes by the ladies over at [community profile] ladybusiness. I particularly like the ideas tossed around about how the structure of the story, with Hazel narrating, might affect the story down the road.
snickfic: [Saga] Alana cradling Hazel and holding a cudgel (Alana)
(So right now my plan for dealing with my Saga feelings is just to make a whole bunch of observations which are maybe obvious but which I nonetheless don't see anyone making. For being a hugely popular comic, I've seen very little actual discussion about it, what it is, what it's doing, or even what's happening in it or how its plot elements fit together. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places. Anyway, more observations of dubious value forthcoming.)

One of the things about Saga that I think is neither good nor bad (though some might disagree) but definitely different from a lot of comics, especially mainstream superhero ones, is how simple the page design is. Greg Burgas at Comic Book Resources has been analyzing comics art every day this year (which I HIGHLY RECOMMEND), and in the scans he's chosen of significant comics artists, there's a lot of pyrotechnics going on in page design. Staples forgoes all that. She never goes for scenes bleeding into each other or overlapping panels. Her panels rarely even have anything but square corners (or corners that are clipped, like photos - I guess for visual interest?), and they pretty much ALWAYS read left to right and top to bottom. IMO it's one of the many reasons Saga is such a great comic to start people with - as comics go, it is super easy to read.

She's also fonder of splash pages than most artists I can think of. It feels a little self-indulgent sometimes, because the story doesn't usually need full pages devoted to a single panel - it's not like we're using the extra space to show off a battle scene or spaceship schematics or anything like that. But man, she uses them so well. Frequently she introduces new characters that way, which means we get to luxuriate in her absolutely gorgeous character designs. The introductions of The Stalk and Gwendolyn are both great examples. Another one is these guys, the fishy journalist boys in love from Jetsam:

image )

More often, though, Staples uses the splash pages as emphasis. Often they function as reveals - of new characters, changed situations, what have you. Other times, you know, we really just need a full page of The Brand in her tie and crash helmet, saying pithy things about governments and PR.

Below we have one of those changed situations. It's also the last page of #24, so beware huge honking spoilers, but ugh, this panel made me SO HAPPY.
spoilery image! )
snickfic: (Saga)
(Can we pretend someone requested I talk a bunch about Saga for the talking meme? Because if we do, then look, a talking meme post!)

So I've been rereading Saga from the beginning, and I'm noticing things I didn't the first time. I actually have a whole bunch of observations, but it's late, so one long one is all you get. Spoilers through #24 (the most recent issue) under the cut.

Snick's somewhat-monthly reaction post to solicits news returns!

Image
* SAGAAAAA. Saga is back, as is almost the entire cast! :DDDD

* This new #1 sounds intriguing: The Empty, by Jimmy Robinson: Tanoor lives in an empty apocalyptic world of poison and decay. Her village is all that remains of humanity as they struggle against mutant beasts and rotting bones. But Tanoor finds a chance to save her people when a stranger drifts into town. A stranger armed with the power to grow life from death. A stranger who could change the world—if Tanoor can keep them alive in the deadly world of The Empty.

* Likewise Postal by Hill/Hawkins and Goodhart: The townsfolk of Eden, Wyoming wake up to the first official murder the town has seen in 25 years. Their reaction to this isn’t normal, and there’s a reason for that. Eden operates as a haven for fugitive criminals who remain here while new identities, often including facial reconstruction, are created for them. There is zero tolerance for any illegal activity that might draw attention to the town and an “official murder” is the last thing they want. A single, tight-knit family runs Eden with the youngest oddball son Mark Shiffron overseeing the postal branch, the only means of shipping in or out of the city.

* Lots of next issues for series I'm enjoying, including East of West, The Wicked + the Divine, Lazarus (although I'm behind on that).

Marvel
* Elektra canceled. The art was so pretty, but the story was so cold. IDK. I wanted to love it.

* Lots of new female-led titles: Spider-Gwen, Silk (both Spider-man affiliated, kind of? Spider-Gwen is AU somehow), and by then we'll be three issues into Angela: Assassin of Asgard, which I must say is not a book that I'm filled with hope for, although I do like women are involved in both the writing and the arting.

* Jorge Molina is taking a shift (or taking over?) on Thor. Given the kind of style he had when he filled in on X-Force, I think he'll be a good fit, especially if they keep the same colorist. Solicit seems to imply that we still don't know new Thor's identity?!

* MS MARVEL VERSUS LOKI. ALL MY DREAMS ARE COME TRUE. I mean, just look at this cover. (Sad we don't have Jake Wyatt back, though - artist this issue is Takeshi Miyazawa, whom I'm not familiar with.)

* I will be interested to read the rest of X-Force once it finally comes to MU. This Fantomex-as-antagonist thing seems designed to make me unhappy, but Spurrier is a clever and complex writer. IDK.

* Storm #8 - Phil Briones arting this issue. I recall quite liking his work on Humphries' UXF, although not as well as I've liked Ibanez.

Black Widow comics, Natasha/Yelena, 4.5k. This is hands down my favorite "pretending to be together" fic I have ever read. Because in this, they're pretending to be together for a spy mission, and instead of celibate pining we have angry UST and then angry very-much-RST. As in canon, Yelena is all tied up in Natasha, and as in canon, Natasha alternately laughs at and indulges that obsession. This is great stuff.

Hit by [archiveofourown.org profile] basset_voyager
Kate Bishop gen, 1k. I don't know what the canonical story is behind why Kate takes up archery (or if there even is one), but I really like this version: she practices as a form of taking control, fighting back against sleeze balls, taking ownership of the space she occupies. Does not depend on any particular YA or Hawkeye canon.

happy hour by [archiveofourown.org profile] jouissant
Saga, The Will + The Stalk gen, 1k. Mission completed, The Will and The Stalk take a breather, and The Will contemplates his occupation. Neat, low-key little character piece.

Red Pen by [archiveofourown.org profile] Hsifeng
Saga, Hazel + Izabel gen, 2.5k. THIS IS SO GOOD. This is the school report of one Hazel, having interviewed her friend Izabel for the purpose. Documents fic! Worldbuilding more cohesive and coherent than I think Vaughan and Staples have created (or aspire to create, for that matter). Just really neat at taking details of the Saga universe and weaving them into a proposed whole (although this was written after #8, so some of it, particularly stuff about the robots, has since been jossed). Very nifty.

YULETIDE. I thought I was excited last year, and yet somehow this year I am even more excited. Last year I comfortably found four things to request; this year I had to squeeze and squeeze before I managed to get my requests down to six.

I hope that you, dear author, are feeling similarly excited. I'm thrilled to have you writing something for me, and the fact that you offered one of these fandoms at all tells me that you have excellent taste. I'm so excited to read whatever it is you choose to write!

Also: personally, when I write for really small fandoms I end up putting all this pressure on myself to write The Definitive Fic in the fandom, but that's silly. If you feel the same, please be assured that I'm not hoping for the fic, just a fic. :)

I've been reading comics fic relevant to my interests as I've stumbled across it. Alas, my tastes are kind of narrow, I guess? In any case, I don't find tons that is even focused on the characters/titles I want, much less stuff I like. But here's some.

No Crash Landings, by [archiveofourown.org profile] jouissant - Saga - The Stalk, The Will
This is exactly the Stalk backstory I needed. Spaceships, tentative friendship, eyebrow-raising asides about the coming-of-age rituals of the Stalk's race.

Speed Bumps, by [archiveofourown.org profile] Salmon_Pink - Young Avengers - David/Tommy
See, this is the kind of kink I expect out of a canon like Marvel, but rarely actually see. Tommy has this problem where, when he gets aroused, time doesn't operate properly for him. It's really a drag for all concerned, but they work it out eventually. Sexy and fun and with sneaky feelings, too.

so rip me up and set me loose by [archiveofourown.org profile] defcontwo - Winter Soldier comics - Natasha/Elektra
This is all sharp edges and teeth, as I'd expect from these two, set just after a major event in the Winter Soldier comic.

Lilac Perfume by [livejournal.com profile] redbrunja - Hawkeye - Clint/Kate
I don't ship this, precisely, but I don't not-ship it? And this is a delightful fic written for Porn Battle that really uses its primary prompt word - lilac - to full advantage.

Embiggen, by [archiveofourown.org profile] thingswithwings - Young Avengers, Ms. Marvel - Kamala Khan, America Chavez
Teen girl superheroes meet, bond, older shares wisdom with younger. THERE IS NO BAD HERE.

the only place, FF, mostly Scott with background Scott/Darla
This is so lovely, a post-canon fic that's a much more somber approach, specifically to Scott and his depression. A really great mix of zany asides and characterization sharp enough to make you bleed. And yet ultimately hopeful.

(And there's even a THIRD FF fic, but I haven't read it yet. A bounty of riches!)

Man, the ATTITUDE Gwen has here. Love the colors, all the little details, and the use of Lying Cat is just perfect. It's must-see.
snickfic: [A+X] Fantomex shooting across the snow (Fantomex)
* When it comes to playing "Who's the alpha/beta/omega," I find it way more interesting to cast leader characters as militant omegas than as alphas who were just naturally born to leadership. Really, I just want to screw with all the a/b/o gender norms at every turn. We are all shocked.

* I have discovered a sudden and mighty need for moderately IC Steve Rogers mpreg. Alas, there seems to be none. There really isn't any het Steve Rogers mpreg.

* I like a lot of MCU characters better than their comics equivalents. I think part of this is actors being able to give even flatly-written characters more nuance and likability: see for example Sharon Carter, who's doing nothing for me in the comics but whom I expect to like in the movie if for no other reason than because she's played by Emily Van Camp, which is perfect casting by the way.

But also, for the guys in particular, it's because male superheroes look so ridiculous in the comics. You know that old, wrong retort that guys are sexualized in comics just like women are? No. Guys in mainstream superhero comics, especially on the cape-and-mask side of things, are bizarre and weirdly bulgy and completely off-putting as sexual objects, and I'm not even talking about Rob Liefield. I'm talking about any of the Cap comics covers.

Which isn't to say you can't have hot men in comics. Marko in Saga is quite attractive. See how he's built more like a normal human being, despite the horns and ears? Yes. I also find Fantomex extremely attractive, but that's like 90% because he has a really fabulous costume. Anybody'd look good in that. *points to icon*

Interestingly, the X-men side of things tends to be slightly less bulgy, partly, I suppose, because a lot of the guys have nonstandard body types in the first place: Beast, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Rockslide. Wolverine's muscular but short, which kind of undercuts the Greek god thing that the male Avengers so often fall prey to.

Several people have made noises to me recently about being curious about comics but unsure where to start, and I realized I had never addressed precisely that question before. Here, then, is a list of suggestions as made by someone who's very enthused about comics but only been actively reading them for eight months.

These are all fairly recent comics, some of them still ongoing, which I personally have read and enjoyed and think would be approachable to someone with very little knowledge of comics continuity, either because they're standalone titles (the Image stuff) or because the writers kept away from the continuity tangles of the larger universe inhabited by the characters (the Marvel stuff). I also stuck to stuff that's available in trades, so that you have a hope of acquiring them through your local library. However, they are all also available via Comixology, the one-stop shop for digital comics by the big publishers.

My Yuletide

Yuletide authors are revealed. I see that fellow Marvel enthusiast and recent new friend [livejournal.com profile] ladymercury_10 wrote my lovely lovely FF fic. I was pretty sure you had, because a) you didn't comment on or kudos it, and b) the date was fairly early in mid-December. (I don't know why it took so long to appear on my "gifts" list - maybe the tag wranglers hadn't wrangled the fandom yet? IDK. You must have been so confused!)

I signed up for Yuletide this year because I wanted to write (and receive!) comics fic, and write it I did. I wrote four pieces, about 6k words total, for FF and Saga and had a delightful time. I will talk about them a bunch more individually later, but for now, links:

“Hey, dog,” he said.

Better in Blue, Saga, Alana/Marko, smutty language porn/actual porn treat for [personal profile] were_duck
Alana is still discovering all the ways she and Marko are different.

I need to get ahold of some real live photo editing software, because there's only so much you can do with the Photobucket image editor. Fortunately, with comics art often a decent crop is all it takes - very little skill required. :D

Most of these are of Saga, for an [livejournal.com profile] insmallpackages wish (great taste like that needs rewarding, I felt), but also a couple of others I made a while back for my own use. Looking at them now, I find it hilarious not only that they are all of ladies - which could perhaps have been predicted - but that nearly all of them involve the lady in question looking straight at the viewer. IDK what to say about that.

Because it comes Charlie-approved!!! )

The "novelty t-shirt" Dean tells Charlie to lose in Pac-Man Fever? Is of a character from Saga (which I didn't recognize when the ep aired, because I hadn't read it yet). My fandoms are collided!

Okay, now I am going to be all :DDDD for the rest of the day.

Saga: Alana and Marko with baby Hazel, text: 'Marko, what the hell are you doing?' 'Cutting the umbilical?' 'You have a sword! You are wearing a sword!'

Everyone and their dog who reads comics has heard about this comic already, so this post is mostly for the rest of you. Alternate title: "Please read this awesome thing I am reading so I can talk about it with you!"

Let me tell you about Saga:
  • Surrealist star-crossed romance/family adventure comic IN SPACE. Alana and Marko are fleeing from opposing sides of a very old war, trying to keep themselves and their newborn alive without getting killed by either side.

  • Written by Brian K. Vaughan (author of Y: The Last Man and the Faith arc of the Buffy S8 comics) and art by Fiona Staples. Ongoing with 14 issues so far; it looks like there are scheduled hiatuses every six issues? There are now two volumes collected the first 12 issues.

  • Definitely an adult-content book. There is violence, sex, nudity, and bits.

  • Gorgeous artwork. The use of color, the expression and individuality of the faces, the visual concept work - Staples does wonderful stuff.

  • Gonzo worldbuilding. One of the people after us is Prince Robot IV, who comes from a race of people with TV sets for heads. Another of the people after us travels with a giant blue hairless cat which, whenever anyone lies in its presence, says, "Lying." There's a significant character with one huge eye in the middle of his face and a minor character that is a human-sized, air-breathing seahorse in a suit. And I will let you discover The Stalk for yourself, but she is possibly my favorite of all.

  • Easy to read – all the pages are left-to-right, top-to-bottom. No panels overlapping with other panels, no following panels all up and down the page. It's always extremely clear what panel to look at next. (This bullet point is aimed specifically at my friends who say they're not sure how to read comics. Saga will start you off very gently!)

  • Lots of awesome women! Specifically Alana and the infant daughter (who narrates), but we also have, uh, various spoilery other people. We frequently have more women than men in a scene.

  • First issue caused a minor hullabaloo for having Alana breastfeeding on the cover.

  • Racial diversity – almost none of these people are actually human, much less of a particular identifiable ethnicity, but Alana is noticeably browner than Marko, and [spoilery other characters] are both much darker still. It's not by species, either; Marko has horns and is light-skinned, but [spoilery character] also has horns and the darkest skin of any of the humanoids we meet.

  • The storytelling makes me trust it. It keeps returning to the elements and events it's introduced, so that a character who's a topic of discussion shows up in person six issues later, and a scene that is referenced in passing is seen in full flashback further down the road. There is no waste here.

  • It's hopeful. There's death, and it's sad, and the war is terrible and the environment in which we are trying to survive is terrible, and yet the story itself seems to be an act of building up, rather than tearing down, if that makes any sense – for the reader and for the characters.

  • The first issue is free! You can pick up the whole 6-issue volume for pretty cheap, either digitally or in hard copy, and the second for not too much more. Or, you know, Amazon. Alternatively, the library! (I'm sure there are also other, less reputable ways of acquiring it, but I can't help you with those.)

So, clearly this is something you want to investigate further, yes? Yes? :D

I quickfast edited this one last time on Friday October 18 - just the general likes/dislikes. I thought I had the whole weekend to fiddle before assignments went out!

First: If you have a story you've been wanting to write about any of these canons, I would love to read it. I talk a lot (a LOT) below about some of these comics, including lots of suggestions, but they are only meant to help get you started. Any story you've been itching to write for these characters, I would love to read.

Also, you definitely don't need to write all the characters listed for any of these canons. I've picked people I like to give you variety, but feel free to zoom in on just one or two.

Another thing: personally, when I write really small fandoms I end up putting all this pressure on myself to write The Definitive Fic in the fandom, but that's silly. If you feel the same, please be assured that I'm not hoping for the fic, just a fic. :)

And finally, I wrote a lot more about some of these canons than others, but I seriously will be thrilled with fic for any of them. I haven't done Yuletide for several years, and I signed up this year specifically because I've fallen in love with comics. Whatever you write for me, I will be excited about. :)

Journey into Mystery )

Saga )

Thank you so very much for writing fic for me, dear author! I can't wait to read it. :)
