snickfic: (ep Dead Things)

Oh my goodness, y'all, my little Oz fic that could won things over at round 1 of the Absence of Light Awards! Specifically, Angst Runner-up for Best Gen and for Best Short. I don't think of it as being a particularly angsty piece, myself, at least by Buffyverse standards, but I'm not complaining. *g* Thanks much to the judges and that secret wonderful person who nominated me. I'll post the shiny award banners as soon as I get to a computer of more amiable disposition. And congrats to the bunches of cool folks who also won!

In other news, yours truly foolishly promised to write a sonnet for [ profile] seasonal_spuffy. Until this I hadn't written a sonnet -- or any formal poetry, really -- in probably eight years. At any rate, today's the day, and here 'tis. ETA: Special thanks to [ profile] goldenusagi, who gave me the idea to write it from a character's POV, instead of... however I thought I was going to write it instead. *g*

A sonnet by Spike, circa S6
Rating: G
Warnings: Pretentious poetry and forced rhymes. Also, this decided to be neither an English sonnet nor an Italian sonnet, but the bastard love child of both...

They wing like day-starved moths to you, as much
To dare your light as end your righteous stand
To seek beneficence at your sure hand
As if the sun stretched languid embered touch
Towards each poor vamp, mesmerized by dawn,
And through his cold, stilled chest, a-search for soul
Then, finding none, bestowed her gift: a coal;
A moment’s pyre, effulgent; dust and gone.
I know it must be like that, at your stake
For just your fingertips alone are flame;
They scorch me, long-dead thing, and just the same
I’d have your blaze, your fists, suffer their ache.
I’ll bask in brilliance ‘til the final flash
Then crumble, roaring, sighing: a fall of ash.
