snickfic: (Marvel)
1. I am making some progress on bb. I had a lot of ambitions for this fic, but several people have reminded me that putting that kind of pressure on myself can stunt the creativity. So, I'm just going to treat it like idfic (although that only helps so much, because I take my idfic kinda seriously, too).

2. I have been extremely productive today. I swept and mopped floors, I sorted the huge pile of papers on my bedroom floor into the filing cabinet I bought for $2 at the garage sale, I put bunches of junk into the garage and/or the trash, and I cleaned my bathroom. This is about about as much housework as I generally do in a month. GO ME. Of course, I quite possibly won't do any more until next month...

3. I told myself I could not buy a Marvel Unlimited pass for myself until bb was done. So much for that. I have to say, though, THANK YOU INTERNET, because I now have years and years of Marvel back issues available for my reading pleasure. It's not perfect; the special panel-by-panel reader has some bugs, and one issue I was reading didn't show any of the narrative text, for some reason. Still. I'm going to try it for the month, and if it I'm still reading at the end of it, I switch to an annual subscription (= much much cheaper).

Which brings us to...

4. THINGS I'VE BEEN READING. (I see this being a regular feature on this blog from now on.)

This has been a hopping fannish week, y'all. Here, I think, is my very last bit of fannish news for a while: the most wonderful [livejournal.com profile] scarletscarlet, who previously drew me lots of bears for teensybang, has claimed me again for [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang. (In theory summaries are anonymous, of course, but, as I suspected, apparently my summary was really super obvious to anyone who knows me.) She'll be illustrating the Gen/Jared a/b/o college AU that follows my other knottingverse fics and that I've wanted to write for a year and a half. YAY FOR FINALLY WRITING IT. Even though the existing draft is /o\ /o\ /o\

I am so tickled that I managed to finish a draft, you have no idea. I really, really wanted to participate again this year, and I'm so glad I'll be able to.

IT HAS BEGUN.

* SPNJ2BB draft is in; claims are tomorrow and open early enough that perhaps I will be claimed by the time I wake up. Teensybang is posted. Rarewomen fic has had final edit. I have discharged ALL MY PRESSING FANNISH OBLIGATIONS.

* [community profile] over40fest: fanworks for characters over forty! Like Giles, for instance. Or Ellen, or Rufus, or Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Yes? :D

* By the way, for those wondering, I discovered that via [community profile] fandomcalendar, one of the best multifandom resources I know for finding fests and events.

I never want to write 20k in a month again. At least not on purpose. It's basically what I did for RBB, but then I was writing to the end of the story, not to some arbitrary word count.

This draft definitely falls down at the end. It needs at least one, maybe two more scenes to end properly, and also we may very well remove the gratuitous porn at the end, or else make it less gratuitous. Ideally I will clean it up some before I send it to my artist. Artist claims on SATURDAY, EEEP.

Also I post for [livejournal.com profile] genteensybang tomorrow. Blessed be to the teensymod that my posting date was not today. (I didn't think to ask when the schedule was being made.)

Speaking of teensybang, go look! Glorious fic already being posted! Glorious art likewise! I can already tell this is going to have one of the highest awesomeness per work quotients of any event this year. Proper recs later.

Also, now that bb is out, I have to tidy up [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen. Guys, I love rarewomen and all that it stands for, but I'm skipping it next year if I sign up for bb again.

Because I want to tell someone that words are happening. Slowly, but they are happening. And I KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT, which is basically my single biggest hang-up when trying to write, especially long things. So.

[livejournal.com profile] genteensybang draft SUBMITTED.

And just in time, since I hear [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen assignments go out on Monday, and also I seriously need to start in on something for [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang. (Although I did post a snippet of the likeliest candidate, over at the check-in post.)

So that hiatus is over. Honestly, it was mostly in my head; I was still around, lurking, I just felt like I had removed any pressure to engage. Although I forgot myself a few times, there, so a few of you heard from me anyway. :D Anyway, I will probably continue to be a little slow responding to comments and such for a while.

Things:
1. Have started watching Breaking Bad; I've seen the first season. Everybody told me it was amazing, and it is. Time lapse photography! Consistent characterization! And also Aaron Paul having the most amusing, most delightful inflection known to man.

However, nobody told me that it is like a marginally more sympathetic Coen brothers miniseries, and it's that, too. I feel like I wouldn't have any idea how to watch this show without first having seen, say, Fargo and The Ladykillers. The former, especially; Walter White reminds me a lot of the Steve Buschemi character in Fargo, only rather more competent. Also, there certain scenes in this show that suggest parallels with the wood chipper.

Otherwise, I don't have a lot to say about it yet other than that I agree with all the points [personal profile] selenak makes in this post.

2. I haven't been writing much. I do have 3k of fic for [livejournal.com profile] genteensybang, but I don't really like it. I don't have a word written for [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang yet and haven't even really settled on a story.

I also have absolutely nothing written for my [livejournal.com profile] spnpairingbingo card; I've managed to write several shippy things since I got it, but they either were pairings not on the card (Sam/Madison, Sam/Jess) or not long enough (Dean/Bela). And now I reeeeally want to write some Meg/Castiel (perhaps inspired by this gifset), which isn't on the card either. I think I'm doing this bingo thing wrong.

3. I watched SPN. My thoughts are brief: spoilers )

4. It never fails to make me sad when I see a fic marked Jared/Gen or Jensen/Danneel on AO3 only to realize that the primary ship is actually J2. This is true of like 95% of the fics marked Jared/Gen or Jensen/Danneel on AO3.

5. [livejournal.com profile] spn_weirdnews will introduce an exciting new feature on Sunday. :D

[livejournal.com profile] shipswap is running another rarepair fic exchange, with nominations now open.

[livejournal.com profile] rarewomen is running again this year, with nominations open soon.

[community profile] megexchange is a fic exchange for fic about one Meg Masters, demon. Sign-ups are open here.

I haven't decided which of these I'm going to sign up for, if any. The Meg-centric fest sounds like a great excuse to hone my Meg skills; I wrote that one Meg+Ruby ficlet a while back, and she was a lot of fun to write. And I already nominated a bunch of ships for Ship Swap, so they're there for me to request if I end up participating.

Really, the only exchanges I'm committing myself to this year are [livejournal.com profile] spnspringfling, because I had a blast last year, and [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_xmas, because I wanted to last year and didn't. Next in priority after those would be [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen, but we will have to see. I did relatively a lot of exchanges last year and kind of wore myself out.

I'm also already signed up for [livejournal.com profile] genteensybang (w00t! writer sign-ups close Thursday!) and [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang, and I'd like to do [livejournal.com profile] spn_reversebang again, because that was really cool last year.

1. Artist claiming is still open over at [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang. If you're interested, you can see all the prompts by joining the comm and then going here (post locked to non-members). If you see a prompt you want, sign up at the artist sign-up post and then claim. There are still intriguing prompts available! And also mine.

EDIT: Mine's claimed now! My self-serving PSA totally worked, you guys. :D

2. Over at [livejournal.com profile] shipswap (which mod team I have joined! hurrah!) we're looking for online resources for nominated canons. We're especially interested in resources for minor canons, but anything you can point us to - wikis, script databases, legal sources of canon, etc - would be appreciated.

1. Two goals this month: [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang (current progress 11.2k / 20k minimum) and [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen (currently 0/1k minimum, but I know what I'll be writing).

2. Have begun watching Goong, on [livejournal.com profile] penny_lane_42's recommendation. Stars Yoon Eun Hye, who also starred in Coffee Prince. This time she's a high school girl and a commoner who's chosen to marry the crown prince of the Korean constitutional monarchy. So far the admittedly cracky premise is being given a much crackier treatment than Coffee Prince. The characters are more slapstick and over the top, unlike in Coffee Prince, whose basic mistaken identity premise was totally sold by the sheer heart in the writing and the acting.

Ugh, I lack the terms to make a useful comparison. As I told Lauren, the difference between Goong and Coffee Prince is like the difference between an author who thinks mpreg is hilarious and one who's genuinely interested in the issues that come out of the premise.

All that said, I don't hate Goong; I just don't love it yet. Lauren has promised me a wonderful main ship once things get going, so I shall forge ahead.

3. Have stopped watching TVD. I'm a season and a half in - I just saw 2.09, aka the Katherine Backstory Episode), and I don't hate it. I'm just paralyzed with not caring very much. I'm having trouble articulating why. Maybe it's that I'm fundamentally disinterested in urban fantasy, with the werewolves and the vampires and all? (You laugh, my BtVS peeps, but 'tis true.) Also I'm fundamentally disinterested in teen soaps, which this still has a lot of elements of. And just... I don't know.

I'm not dismissing it for all time; it's possible I'll come back at some point in the future and be all YAY VAMPIRE DIARIES. I had the following conversation with [personal profile] next_to_normal in chat:

Me: I think it might be one of those things where I'm just not in the mood?
Next_to_Normal: you and your MOODS

Heh. Yes.

4. Have been rewatching M*A*S*H off and on, starting with S1. Gah, how is it possible that I hate so many sitcoms and yet I love this one so much? I think it's the underlying gritty realism that saves it for me; I really appreciate the contrast. Plus it's a great stable of actors. I'm particularly fond of Alan Alda, McLean Stevenson, and Gary Burghoff. Also Larry Linville this time around, who's so very perfect as Frank.
