It is so fun.

* There've been so many hockey developments this week that I don't know where to start. Olli contract signing (<3333333)! Justin Schultz acquisition! Scuderi traded to LA because he "didn't fit in with Chicago's plans" (LOL)! We got Geno back and beat the Jets, and we called Murray up from WBS, and just, lots of hockey things.

Nabbed from many people.

1. Your 3 fanworks with the most AO3 comment threads: Make Yourself at Home (Hockey RPF, Sid/Geno, bowerbird AU), my new most popular fic ever. Three Christmases with Miss Honey (Matilda, Matilda + Miss Hockey), a moderate hit for YT one year that I thought might be my most popular fic until the end of time. Switch Hitter (Hockey RPF, girl!Sid/Geno, D/s AU).

2. Your 3 fanworks with the most kudos: Base Notes (Hockey RPF, Sid/Geno, a/b/o) – my first hockey fic! Make Yourself at Home, again. And finally And in Health (Hockey RPF, Sid/Geno). This fandom has spoiled me for kudos, basically.

3. Your oldest fanwork: A Right Sorry Couple of Vamps (BtVS/Ats, Spike+Darla), written for the Fall Fandom Free-for-All back in 2008.

4. Your latest fanwork: three's a crowd (SPN, Tamara+Sam), a weird, atmospheric little futurefic for [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_xmas.

5. Fanwork you are proudest of: ONE fanwork?? How about I just pick one that comes to mind: worn for sleeping (SPN, Jess/Sam), which is moody and creepy and has a twist and says stuff about canon, all in 1100 words. Still super pleased with how that one turned out.

6. Your longest fanwork: Still Seraph (BtVS, Spike+ensemble, mpreg), a 67k fic I finished in 2009. Have never even come close since. But I've got a WIP that might bump up close to it if I can ever finish. /o\

7. Your 3 fanworks with the most bookmarks: Base Notes, Make Yourself at Home, Switch Hitter. Hockey fandom does it again.

8. Your top 3 crossover works: I have no idea how we're measuring this. I write very few crossovers anyway, but here are three I'm fond of: This is the World We Made (BtVS/Dollhouse, Dawn+Topher), the first fic I've managed to write that really gets at how I feel about how freaking badass Dawn Summers would grow up to be. The Very Small Girl and the Monster (BtVS/Firefly, River+Spike), far-future fic for BtVS in which River meets someone who can finally explain who she is. Lift (Firefly/Matilda, River+Matilda), another River-centric crossover that gets a lot of mileage out of her dreams. Probably the crackiest crossover I've ever attempted, in terms of canons crossed.

9. Your favorite characters to portray: I'm going to assume this means "favorite characters to write, in which case Dawn Summers, Illyria, Jo Harvelle, Genevieve Cortese, Geno.

I JUST remembered that the title I had in mind for it all along was "The Man Who Plead His Belly" inspired by this bit of English law. I still think that was a fantastic title - too bad it will never have a finished fic to go with it.
snickfic: Sam and Dean (SPN)
Ages ago, I wrote 8k of an S3 AU fic where Sam determines that, for reasons, the way to keep Dean out of hell (for a little while, anyway) is to get him pregnant. I had a lot of fun with the worldbuilding of it, which was motivated by (if not apparently related to) some of what [livejournal.com profile] big_pink did in her magnum opus Red (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED IF YOU HAVE NEVER READ). I also got a huge kick out of my OC.

I got bogged down by figuring out Plot, though, forever my nemesis. The fic has been mouldering long enough that I can admit I will never finish it, so I'm setting it free, and here it is, for anyone who's curious.

Why do one recs post in a day when you can do two? I mean, obviously. It's been three years since I made an SPN recs post (and a year since [livejournal.com profile] rocksalt_recs closed, *sob*) so obviously some of these of have been sitting around for a quite a while! Which means they are... well-aged, right? Right?

You can sort all (?) the SPN characters that have appeared in at least two episodes here.

Some of these were super hard decisions (Jo vs Ellen? Jo vs Amelia???), but it shook out into something I'm pretty happy with, in about three tiers: top third are the characters I love, middle third are characters I have no or conflicting feelings towards, bottom third are characters that make me say "ugh", plus all the S9-S10 characters I haven't seen.

LIST )

On the whole, I definitely favored earlier over later, other things being more or less equal. The two things I learned during sorting is that I have a whole lot more antipathy towards Ben Braeden than I would have guessed - me kicking against the convenient cute kid thing, presumably - and a whole lot more appreciation for Gwen Campbell. Clearly this means I should write some Gwen Campbell fic? :D

Also, Dean's place on the list is Dean circa S8 (when I stopped). If I could compartmentalize him and just think about Dean S1-7 or so, he'd have placed very differently.

Now I'm come over all nostalgic. *sniff*

YAY, I did this exchange last year and am super excited to do it again. I hope you are also excited! I tried to include both fluffy/sexy prompts and horror prompts for each character/fandom I requested. However, they’re just ideas, so if you have something else you’d like to write or draw related to my requested characters, feel free! I've also included lists of stuff I like in general, to help inspire you.

I have fewer horror prompts than sexy/fluffy prompts, but that's just because I had a harder time thinking of prompts. Please be assured I would be delighted by horror fic or art! Below I’ve included some general types of horror I like, though, so maybe that will help inspire you.

General things I don’t like / DNW: sexual violence or threats thereof; gore for the sake of gore; death of the POV character; trauma to eyes, hands, or teeth. Oh hey, another SPN fic exchange thingy! A little bit like Spring Fling in that it has a prompt, a character, and a 500 word minimum, but a much longer lead time and also you are supposed to twist the prompt while sticking to the letter of it, which sounds like lots of fun. :D (Even though I'm not sure my prompt is really great for twistiness. Okay, when I say bunches I mean mostly hockey, but there's a few other things, too, which I put first.

* [livejournal.com profile] spnspringfling is open for signups! This is quite possibly my favorite fannish event of any kind, just because of how it's structured - low min AND a max word count, prompts but you don't know your recip, tight deadline, anon posting. If you're into SPN at all, definitely consider giving this a try. It's way fun.

* You know that 3 Sentence Ficathon I linked to a while back? It has 3500 comments now and is still going. It's like people are pining for the prompt memes of yore. Or something.

* On the paucity of data available in women's sports (shocking, I know)

* Marc-Andre Fleury, ruiner of things

* My Geno/Flower feelings, let me show you them. Also did you know that they roomed together for the latter half of the 2011-2012 season? Did you? HMMM. :D

* The Pens did a Casino night for charity. Apparently Flower kept tossing cards on the ground if he didn't like them, and meanwhile Geno gave good face, as usual. I have about 25 posts in my Tumblr likes; IDK how I'm supposed to choose which ones to reblog.

* This article by Pascal Dupuis about his two blood clots in a year is really a gut-wrenching read.

* This failure to score a goal is like how Charlie Chaplin would fail to score a goal.

* Have a bunch of hockey microfic. Only a tweet long each. There's a bunch that are awfully fun.

* Yesterday found myself in weird position of being resident expert on classic rock as found in SPN, despite knowing basically nothing about classic rock generally. In the process, though, I found myself remembering just how much of what I loved about early SPN was the aesthetic: music, cinematography, etc. I wonder whether, if the show still sounded and LOOKED that good, I might still be watching.

And say what you like about ships or family dynamics or whatever, I think that the aesthetic was a lot of what the early fandom was responding to, too, even though they expressed it in terms like "sexual tension" and "codependence" and "h/c."

Dang it, now I want an SPN rewatch. At least of S1.

* Geno is skating again, will be going on the Canada trip, and may well be playing again as early as Wednesday! Which means chances of him playing against Canucks on Saturday are VERY HIGH! :D!!!

This was the year of ALL THE FANDOMS and ALL THE EXCHANGES. I didn’t so much mind hopping and skipping around fandoms, but my first and foremost goal for next year is FEWER EXCHANGES.

Anyway, as a result of those two things, my writing has been kind of fragmented. I ended up posting 75k words in finished fic, which is down just a tidge from last year and included several exchange fics I was really happy with. I ended up writing 21 fics - 4 hockey, 4 SPN, 3 Buffyverse, 3 Marvel comics, 2 Saga, 1 SPN RPF, 1 MCU, 1 Downton Abbey, and 1 Decoys (movie).

In addition, I wrote somewhere between 30 and 40k this year on various other fic projects that have not yet seen the light of day, which is a little frustrating. One of my goals for the new year will definitely be to get some of those finished up and out into the world.

Below the cut I go into a LOT more detail, because these retrospective things are better than cake.

a TV post

snickfic: Sam Dean pilot (SD in the beginning)
Bored and in need of free TV, I started watching Jane the Virgin. Let's be clear: this is not the show the title says it is. The title sounds like a sex comedy to me, but in fact what they seem to be going for is a play on Mary the Virgin, ie, immaculate conception. You see why everyone in the titling department should be fired.

So instead of a sex comedy, what it is is a humorously self-aware English-language attempt at a telenovela, or Spanish soap opera - in this case, one about a virgin who accidentally gets artificially inseminated and is now pregnant (which is the first of many, many unlikely happenings). And it's actually really cute! Jane's relationships with her mom and grandmother are complicated but loving, and the main actress in particular is adorable.

I also really love that she is basically constitutionally incapable of lying, which means she spends little to no time hiding things from people. I had NO IDEA how much I wanted this until I started watching this show. People making things harder for themselves by not communicating facts to other people stresses me out; this show is therefore so relaxing for me.

Unfortunately everyone else in the show seems to be some degree of terrible, except for the star of the in-show telenovela, who is terrible but also hilarious, and the narrator, who is just hilarious. I would like to root for the baby's father's sister, a screw-up who's presently banging another man's wife, and the father's wife, who is still unmitigatedly terrible, so I am hoping they both produce some sympathetic qualities soon so I can.

I suspect I may want more TV now with colder weather (26 on the way to work this morning!) and shorter days. Who knows, maybe I'll finally make it through B5. [community profile] trickortreatex authors are revealed! I wrote five things, which I'm lumping here all in one post for convenience. I had a lot of fun playing in basically all my fandoms, especially since the Buffy characters I want to write usually aren't eligible for exchanges.

However, out of the bunch I definitely had a couple of favorites: the hockey fic (which at 4k feels absurdly long for a treat in a 300 word exchange, but oh well) and the steampunk Meg/Castiel. Because, you know, steampunk Meg/Castiel. Even if the fic doesn't really have a plot, as such.

When In Doubt, Set It On Fire - hockey RPF, Crosby/Ovechkin, 4000 words
First Sidney tells Alex Consol's ice is cursed. Then he says he has a plan to fix it. Then he stops talking to Alex very much at all, and that's when Alex starts to get worried. -- More monster-y than actual horror, it turned out. Oh well.

bright wings - SPN, Meg/Castiel, 1200 words
Castiel has metal wings. Meg has an oil can. -- AKA the steampunk fic. :DDD

The Beginning of a Beautiful Friendship - SPN, Meg + Bela friendship, 700 words
Meg goes to hell in search of loyal subjects. She thinks she may have found one. -- A treat for [livejournal.com profile] gryfndor_godess, with bonus Meg kvetching of Crowley's redecorating scheme. :D

Enough to Make a Girl Feel All Gooey - BtVS, Buffy/Faith, 500 words
Buffy told Faith to stay in Cleveland. Yeah, right. -- A treat for [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni, theoretically an AU of the Wishverse. Yes, an AU of the AU. Hush.

wherever you go, there you are - MCU, Natasha + Bucky, 500 words
Natasha thought about the places she’d like to hide, given a choice. She ordered them by practicality, and she started at the bottom. -- My first MCU fic! Behold!

Meme snagged from Tumblr:
In a text post, list ten FICS that have stayed with you in some way. Don’t take but a few minutes, and don’t think too hard — they don’t have to be the “right” works, or even all the same pairing or fandom, just the fics that have touched you or that stuck with you somehow. Tag ten friends, including me, so I’ll see your list. Make sure you let your friends know you’ve tagged them!

This somehow ended up being a sort of “Long IMPORTANT Fics” list, except when it’s instead a “Long RIDICULOUSLY IDDY Fics” list. I think if I want to make a list that has any one-shots in it at all, I’m going to have to make it an all-one-shots list to begin with. Sigh.

Should note that these are not all unqualified recs, just stuff that has stuck with me. Also, I totally broke that “don’t take but a few minutes” rule.

  • Red - SPN, gen, broke my brain and put it back together and completely reshaped my idea of what fanfiction could be.

  • Let Not the Sun Go Down - SPN RPF, werecats and mpreg and body identity stuff. My id, let me show you it.

  • Res Gestae - SPN, Wincest, plotty sex swap with pregnancy. I read this fic before I even saw the show because it promised me mpreg. Something about the angst and circumstances have always stuck with me, especially since I AM DUMB and did not see the twist coming.

  • Crow on the Cradle - SPN, nominally Sam/Jess but mostly Jess gen in which Sam goes missing pre-pilot and Jess ends up tagging along with the Winchesters to look for him. This is kroki_refur, possibly my single favorite SPN author, and this is I think the very first fic of hers I read and one that ruined me for all later Jess fic. It’s haunting and dark and heartbreaking and LONG and so, so good.

  • Love’s The Burning Girl - Trek RPF, Zoe Saldana gets tired of the acting life and goes into directing. I find Zoe’s journey of self-discovery and following her ambitions just so hopeful.

  • Lunch and Other Obscenities - Star Trek Reboot, Uhura and her roommate Gaila make some cultural accommodations. Girl friendship yay, but also it does something more successfully than any pro SFF I’ve read ever has: shows what it might actually be like in a society where all the taboos are centered on something other than sex. (IDK how Zoe Saldana features twice on this list; I was never even in Star Trek Reboot fandom.)

  • Daemons Luminati - BtVS, S6 AU in which Spike gets raped by angels?? I’ve read this fic multiple times and was never quite sure exactly what I was reading, and I honestly have even less an idea now as time has gone on and I’ve gotten some more perspective on it, but it’s nonetheless IMO one of the true classics of Buffy fandom.

  • Kindred Spirits - BtVS, the Dawn/Ethan fic so good that everyone apparently decided there didn’t need to be any more. Also the best exploration of Dawn herself and of the implications of the Key that I have ever seen. Honestly half of this list could be nwhepcat; she was a formative fannish influence for me.

  • Fastening Your One Heart to Every Falling Thing - hockey RPF, the soulbonding fic with no soulbonding in it. Also the reason I am in hockey fandom and, by extension I guess, everyone I’ve dragged into it with me.

  • Never Hard to Find - hockey RPF, Sid/Geno. I originally saw this recced as The One With the Ficus Plant, and by gum they were not wrong. This is also a story about two people being reeeally bad at communicating with each other and themselves in a way that doesn’t drive me crazy. But mostly: ficus.

Not listed: the rapey dystopian J2 mpreg fic that was the final nudge that got me to start watching SPN back in 2011. I am never admitting to that one in public.
snickfic: [A+X] Fantomex shooting across the snow (Fantomex)
[livejournal.com profile] rahirah asked me a question that I thought merited its own post, because it's a question that I'm always interested in seeing other people answer, too: What attracts you to fandoms where you write fic, as opposed to fandoms where you may just read/watch?

I used to think there was some complicated and mysterious alchemy that determined what my next fandom would be, but in fact it seems to boil down to two things:

1. A character I obsess over. This character has so far always been male, which might surprise some of you given my enthusiasm the last few years for female characters. Historically, though, my pattern is: fall in love with male character, get into fandom, eventually switch allegiances primarily to female characters. (Who knows what this bodes in terms of hockey fandom.)

Now, why some male characters do this for me and not others is mysterious; there are some similarities that can be drawn between Spike and Dean Winchester, but my most recent obsession is character/RL person Evgeni Malkin, who has basically no similarities with either of the other two.

2. Lots of fic already existing about said character. It turns out that I can love a character to bits and pieces, but if there isn't tons of fic to feed my interest, it withers and dies. And what's more, I need all that fic to play off of when I start writing my own, which is what rahirah really asked. Writing fic for a small/non-existent fandom is hard work, as far as I'm concerned - much harder than writing for a larger fandom. I'm not great at inventing the wheel; I will never be one of those authors on the forefront of a new fandom, blazing the trail. I need a fandom to be in conversation with.

--

Now, the exception to all this for me is Marvel comics.

cut for long description of the shape of Marvel canon and fandom )

Having given you all that background, Marvel comics really does not look like the fandom for me, does it? Current fannish communities and fic are clustered largely around a handful of titles I'm not fannishly invested in, and the only male character I care all that much about, Fantomex, has like five fics on AO3.

And yet, like I said, Marvel comics are the exception to all my fannish patterns, because I've loved the female characters right from the start and because I continue to love the canon so much that I keep offering various pieces of it in exchanges and trying my hand at it. I'm pretty sure Marvel comics is never going to be my main fic fandom, because there just isn't enough concentrated community and fic. (This means when I write fic, there aren't a ton of people interested, either.) But apparently I'm going to keep plugging away nonetheless.

--

Now that I've said all that: What does it take for a canon to move you to writing fic/making art/getting fannishly creative? What are the secret ingredients?

snickfic: Sam Dean (SD)
In a House by the Sea, with Mermaids (AO3 | LJ) - SPN - Sam, Dean - 3.4k, rated PG-13

Here's a fic for a major fandom about it's primary characters, whom I've written little about together, perhaps surprisingly. I wrote this fic for an [livejournal.com profile] ohsam event for what is possibly my favorite prompt that I have ever filled:

Curtain fic. Boys have stopped hunting. There’s a farmhouse or house by the sea or whatever. Sam has a huge cat that adores him. Dean and the cat make stink-eyes at one another. Both boys are adjusting to their wounds – psychological and otherwise – but they get by. It’d be all pretty great, really, were it not for the fact that Sam’s been hearing sounds – wailing out in the fields (or on the beach), the sound of crying, etc. It’s hard to convince Dean that it’s real, that he’s not imagining it when he’s completely deaf in both ears and has been for the last couple of years. Gen, pls! (And if you put one of them in glasses, I’ll love you forever and ever.)

The prompt's so evocative, suggesting mood and setting and the beginnings of a plot. It just cries out for a story. I'm proud to say that I got every one of those items in except the cat (and I had plans for him, too, but in the end he just didn't fit. I can tell you, though, that he was an enormous buff-colored long hair named Nemo).

For some reason actually writing the fic was like pulling teeth, partly because for once I started it with an image and some nice words rather than a firm scenario. In that way it was much more like my pro-fic writing experiences than fanfic. I like it now that it's done, though. It's by far the happiest Sam-and-Dean fic I've ever written, and probably the only curtainfic for them I'm ever likely to write. The setting still makes me ridiculously happy, because Sam and Dean by the sea! How great is that? And I remain quite smug about a particular detail related to the titular mermaid.

Anyway, I ended up just browsing on AO3, which led me to an absolute gem of a horror piece that I just recced at [livejournal.com profile] rocksalt_recs, here. So you should check it out. And also rec, because it is open reccing at rocksalt_recs. See?

Jo's Last Chance Coffee Shop (LJ | AO3) - SPN - Jo/Ruby - 3k, rated R
Summary: Out of all the coffee shops in all the crumbling post-apocalyptic world, Ruby walks into Jo's.

This fic is what happens when I get it into my head to write a post-apocalyptic coffee shop AU. In a world that fell apart somewhere mid-S4 (for reasons that are never explicitly given in the fic but which begin and end with Eve), Jo's alone, surrounded by monsters, and no longer interested in much anything except making coffee for people and maybe, in memory of her mom, serving as something of a resource for hunters, the way the Roadhouse always was. And into this fragile status quo walks Ruby, looking for Sam Winchester.

I love the world I developed for this, I love this muted, shades-of-gray Jo, and I love the relationship I developed between her and Ruby. This is exactly the kind of relationship that post-apocalyptic and other catastrophic scenarios provide some fertile ground for. Everything's so deliciously bleak and prickly!

I keep saying I've written more S8 fic than anything else, but I decided it was time to put it to the test. So, voila, a list! With some fics that featured characters from one season set in another season, I counted it twice.

list behind cut )

So I've actually written one more related to S5 than S8, to my surprise. I think it's interesting to note that of the first eight seasons, those are two of the three I would point to as the most deeply flawed. OTOH, S8 introduces a lot of new and interesting elements, while S5 gives us an end-of-the-world setting plus a lot of interesting character combinations, so that accounts for most of my fic writing. (I rarely write fic to explain canon's holes or fix its weaknesses. Just not my favorite thing to do. It might be due to laziness.)

Meanwhile, I have written exactly one fic related to S7, and it's actually set pre-season using a character introduced in S7 (Amy the kitsune). So that tells you all my feelings about S7. I'm not sure why I haven't written more in S1, unless it's just because it's soooo Sam-and-Dean centric, and I've actually written very little straight Sam-and-Dean.

Fic for me: Attraction by [archiveofourown.org profile] Alley_Skywalker - Downton Abbey, Mary/Lavinia
Someone wrote me Mary/Lavinia!! This pairing was the first femslash OTP of my heart, and lo, now there is fic, just for me. It's from Lavinia's POV and it about her being dazzled by Mary, which a quite understandable reaction, IMO. Yes. :D

Fic by me:
Title: Ain't No Mountain
Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing: Claire/Castiel
Words / Rating: 4600 words / hard R
Content / Warnings: pseudo-incest, dubcon on Castiel's part, underage (Claire is 17), unsafe sex, post-S8
Summary: This time, Castiel's the one sitting still, and Claire's the one blowing into his life with gale force.

A/N: YAY. I haven't been this excited about a fic I've written since Yuletide at least. I've been meaning to write Claire/Castiel for quite a while, and my recip gave me the perfect excuse. It is not perfect, I'm not positive I hit all the notes quite right that I wanted to hit, and I worry that I did not represent the screwedupness of the situation quite sufficiently. But still, I am Quite Pleased. :D

I have been reading [livejournal.com profile] spnspringfling very indifferently, which basically means "only the things with women and also occasional other rare pairs." From that group, though, there's been a surplus of really great stuff. Behold!

Greeting the Monster in Our Easter Dresses - Meg/Abaddon
Mostly a Meg character study, set mostly in a hell that's whimsical but fully tangible. This is Meg all the way through, doing as she's bid but enjoying Earth more than she should, serving her cause but still taking pleasures for herself where she finds them. And the writing is ace.

Welcome Home - Sam/Dean/Jess
I generally read very little Wincest, but it turns out I am a sucker for Wincest/girl threesomes, especially quiet happy ones, which this eventually becomes. The simmering tension of all the things Jess doesn't know about Sam is what makes this one, I think.

Three Things - pre-Sam/Kevin
In which Kevin comes back from the dead and has trouble making the adjustment. Also involves Sam walking around in his brain and then having a heart to heart with him. The dream sequence is really nicely done and suits Kevin's character very well, and the interactions with them give some neat insight into Sam as well.

All Good Things - Sam/Tessa
Elegiac. Sad and terrible and lovely, with great imagery of a Sam in a big empty world with only ants, snakes, and a reaper for company.

Our Last Summer - Jared/Jensen/Genevieve (NSFW)
And now some art! This is just gorgeous, the intimacy, the lines and colors, the late-summer feel that suffuses everything.

[livejournal.com profile] ever_neutral asked for: you/shipping! Are you a big shipper/multi-shipper, how does shipper fandom delight/frustrate you, has the way you ship things changed, etc.

This topic feels like it requires a few thousand words to do it justice, and I don't even know what most of those words would be. Nonetheless, off we go.

I have never had a lot of ships I feel strongly enough about to write about and read fanfic for. In fact, in terms of ships about which I am actively fannish, the list is pretty much Spike/Buffy, Faith/Giles, Meg/Castiel, Sam/Amelia, Gen/Jared, Jared/Jensen, Psylocke/Fantomex and Psylocke/Fantomex/Cluster (from X-men/Uncanny X-Force). If we also talk about fandoms I don't actively participate in, we could add Mary/Lavinia from Downton Abbey, and... I'm sure there are a couple more, but I can't think of them. Basically, it's a special ship that gets and keeps my attention after the first memory of the canon starts to fade.

I don't know that those ships listed have much in the way of common features, either. The one big one would be that most of these ships are ships that I want to work and believe would work despite major reasons why they shouldn't. A vampire in love with the Slayer, an angel who's kind of bad sweet on a demon who's kind of good, the gloriously damaged mess that is Sam/Amelia, streetwise Faith and tweedy Giles (all the better a match for having had a rebellious punk phase himself) - none of those are easy or obvious pairings, and fic that assumes they are easy does nothing to satisfy my shipping itch. What I want are ships that are hard, that might potentially clash for reasons of personality, ethics, or just age differences, but which nonetheless are shown by canon or fic to be sustainable, even joyous relationships for the people involved. There is, to me, so much hope in that; it's part of my personal need to see things built up, rather than be torn down, although of course the former is so much harder than the latter.

(The flipside is that most of my major ships have the potential for disastrous ruin, but needless to say I find fic that goes that route to be much less satisfying. :D)

The oddballs here are the RPF ships. Jared/Gen and Jared/Jensen are like relationships between paper dolls: I expect each character to maintain certain basic characteristics from one fic to the next, but beyond that it's just faces, and sometimes not even those. IDK; RPF shipping, especially the way I do it with the werebears and the space AUs, is a peculiar and inexplicable thing.

All of that isn't to say that I don't read and even write fic involving lots and lots of other ships. SPN fandom in particular has turned me into much more of a multishipper, because all the FPF pairings I like are rarepairs and have precious little fic about them. Therefore I have personally written Sam/Jo, Sam/Amy the kitsune, Sam/Tamara, Sam/Jess, Dean/Ellen, Jo/Ruby, Ellen/Rufus, and surely some others I'm not thinking of, and I've read tons more. Presently I find myself with a weakness for Kevin slash ships, which I suspect is all [livejournal.com profile] downjune's fault, and I am always prepared to ship Castiel/ladies. I don't hold nearly as tightly to any of these ships as I do those listed up above, but I enjoy dabbling and thinking about the what-ifs. It's fun; it's play. Every so often I even write myself into shipping something new.

*scratches head* I think that's all I've got, re: shipping. So there you have it.

Amelia! Sam/Amelia! One of my very favorite aspects of S8; [livejournal.com profile] de_nugis knows which way my heart lies. Of course, there was no way this was going to be a short post...

cut for length )

Note: If you want to comment to this post solely to tell me that you don't like Amelia or Sam/Amelia, please refrain. I'm often happy to hear about why people dislike things I like, but this is not one of those posts.
snickfic: On With the Exposition (mood writing)
Last year was super productive for me; this year was slightly less so, but still my second-best writing year ever. I wrote or finished two more +20k fics, which pleases me. I didn't write as much stuff this year I was super happy with, though; I don't feel like I was experimenting in as many directions as last year, either. IDK, maybe I was getting more solid at the things I learned last year, rather than learning new ones. However, I did write 26.5 fics – 14 SPN, 6.5 SPN RPF, 3 Saga, 1 FF, 1 Discworld, 1 Buffyverse, for a total of 79k words, which is nothing to sneeze at, I suppose.

Below the cut I go into a LOT more detail, because these retrospective things are better than cake.

It is that time folks - the time of the year when Snick goes on and on and on about the prior fannish year. I'm going to write a fic-specific round-up once Yuletide's revealed, but in the meantime, here's a summary of the rest of my fannish activity this year.
